The California Highway Patrol's Oakland office shared images Monday showing the aftermath of a brief vehicle pursuit after a speeding driver in a Maserati refused to stop for an officer attempting to pull him over, the CHP said.
The 32-year-old male driver on 580 westbound accelerated to over 100 mph and a pursuit ensued, according to CHP.
"The Maserati exited the freeway, drove up an embankment, and collided with the underside of the freeway," Oakland CHP said.

The driver allegedly exited the freeway at West Street, drove up an embankment and collided with the underside of the freeway, a statement said.
"It was a short-lived pursuit," Officer David Arias, a spokesperson for Oakland CHP, further explained. "He didn't make it far before he exited and as soon as he exited, instead of going straight, he veered left, went off the ramp and then went up the embankment and collided with the underside of the freeway."
The images show a car wedged under the freeway in a place you'd never think would be accessible to a vehicle.
"Taking the term 'flying home' a bit too far," the CHP wrote in an Instagram post sharing the images.
The driver was taken to a local hospital due to a complaint of pain and will be facing charges for reckless evading, CHP said. An investigation is underway.
"It's unbelievable that he didn't die," Arias said. "It's crazy that he lived."
No one else was in the Maserati that Arias said is owned by the driver's girlfriend.

I wonder if insurance pays out when a car is totaled in the course of a criminal driving violation?

According to
jalopnik.com, the vehicle was a Maserati Levante, the price of which starts at about $75K.
I'm thinking that if you can afford a car like that, insurance is one of your lesser worries.

Yes, insurance will pay (assuming the owner has collision coverage). Generally the collision insurance exclusion would be for intentional damage to the vehicle, and I don't see anything indicting the crash was intentional. There might be an exclusion for damage incurred in the course of committing a crime, but again, I don't know that any of these acts constitutes an actual criminal violation -- it would depend on the specifics of the California Code; to me, though, this looks like ordinary motor vehicle violations for speeding/reckless driving and fleeing/eluding police, with aggravated assholery. (Oh, CA Motor Vehicle Code 2800.2 apparently does provide for either misdemeanor or felony prosecution of "reckless evading" of police by driving with "willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property.") But the owner/insured was not operating the vehicle and to the extent her boyfriend was negligent in driving it, or to the extent he was using it beyond the scope of its permitted use, that's exactly what you have insurance for.

You're allowed to let other people use your car; that doesn't void insurance coverage.
