"SAN FRANCISCO, CA- Brazen shoplifting in San Francisco has forced more than a dozen Walgreens drug stores to close over the last five years thanks to a law that legalizes shoplifting of up to $950 worth of goods.
The City Council passed Prop 47, which is the ordinance that prevents police officers from arresting or even stopping anyone who steals less than $950 worth of goods.
Now, organized gangs of thieves gather together and run into a store as a group to grab everything and anything they can carry out of the store knowing full well that the police nor the store owners can do a thing to stop them.
According to reports, authorities stated that criminal gangs are responsible for the vast majority of thefts, which are of course causing businesses millions of dollars in losses. District 11 Supervisor for CVS, Ahsha Safai, said in a statement:
“85 percent of their loss is committed by organized criminal activity. That to me was just shocking.”
Safai added:
“They will rob about maybe $1,000-$2,000 worth of goods from each store from 10 stores or more in a single day.”
Reportedly, 17 Walgreens stores have closed over the last five years because of shoplifting. San Francisco has become one of the epicenters for organized retail crime in the United States and the repeated closures of these stores hurt Walgreens’ neighbors. Safai said:
“It impacts everyone. Impacts seniors, impacts families, impacts the small businesses in the area. It’s bad all the way around.”
Safai added that the theft is completely out of control and local residents are afraid to enter the store because of the gangs roaming the aisles. "

And a simple search would show that Prop 47 did not do what you have alleged; it classified certain low level felonies as misdemeanors, but did not legalize them.

Check the following videos.
If it was YOUR store being looted in broad daylight by persons — regardless of skin color, economic condition, or ethnic origin — doing stuff like this, apparently without fear of apprehension or any other repercussions, what would YOU do? You dassn't dare try to stop them because for all you know they've got a loaded 9-mm in their hoodie pocket, and even if you're one of Trump's Troopers and are carrying concealed yourself, the last thing we need is a modern day 'Shoot-out at the Walgreen Corral' — although the mental image of a thief bleeding out over a garbage bag full of stolen cosmetics or OTC drugs, or a shattered jewelry case following a thwarted smash-and-grab, does provide one with a certain amount of visceral satisfaction.
And don't say that it's only property and the insurance will cover it. Ultimately, SOMEONE has to pay for the loss, and if it goes to the insurance company eventually they will raise the rates for coverage so high that individual store owners — or in the case of Walgreens, upper-level management — will make the decision that they can't afford it and close in order to control their losses.
So don't blame Walgreens or the liberals. Put the blame squarely where it belongs — on the fuckin' thieves themselves. -"BB"-

I can't blame Walgreens for telling their employees not to confront shoplifters--are they really expected to risk their lives for minimum wage? I recall (when I was in high school), I managed a concession stand at a drive in movie theater, and the theater manager and I would make the night deposit every night (usually around 1:30 in the winter, later in the summer. He drove and I sat with a loaded 38 revolver in my lap (no training, I never even fired one), all for the princely sum of $1.50 an hour. In retrospect, it really wasn't worth it (I'd never want my teenage kid doing that (I doubt it was even legal), but as a kid I felt like big shot. Confrontation shouldn't be encouraged; it's just not worth the risk.
You (or somebody but I think it was you) already did this with the same stupid question.
Meade, you don't find this stealing outrageous, or is it that you approve of stealing? Maybe the penalties for theft in San Francisco have been reduced so much they might as well not exist. The criminals don't respect the penalties for theft, or they wouldn't be so blatant. Why should one work when they can steal? Can a society function like that?
I realize that what society sees as wrong changes over time. The ancient Romans saw nothing wrong with a citizen buying one of the plentiful blonde, blue-eyed slaves for the sole purpose of raping and torturing to death. After all, they were cheaper than dogs. So as I said, I realize what is considered wrong does change over time; so, am I just a relic of the past, or is stealing still wrong?

Sure liberty, potential shoplifters perform cost/benefit analyses before attempting any theft. If we increased penalties ten fold, the crimes would still occur, much as they did when certain crimes resulted in a loss of life. This is a problem that has to be dealt with, but increasing penalties is not going to solve it.

You dingbat - this is the stupid question you asked: "What were the liberals think?"
You asked no question and made no statement about approving or disapproving of theft, so don't try to ask a further stupid question in a lame effort to make me look bad.

Honestly, he is even bad at trolling. It's pathetic, really.

And I still don't know who he thinks the "liberals" are; kind of like Archie with "pinkos".

That logic hasn’t been been borne out with anti-vax COVID deaths.

I am not trolling, and I am not interested in making you look bad. And, why should you care these people don't know who you are? An anonymous forum should be the one place in the world where we can be honest.
Believe it or not, I want to know why most people on this site are not shocked by such outrageous crimes? Are they crimes or some kind of social justice?

Because shoplifting is not such an outrageous crime.
Raping people young and old is an outrageous crime. Murder is an outrageous crime. Arson of inhabited structures (to my way of thinking this includes wild lands inhabited by countless living things) is an outrageous crime. Promoting the sale of a highly addictive drug that results in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and the destroyed lives of millions more is an outrageous crime (hello Sackler crime family), etc.
Shoplifting from a retail store is not so outrageous, especially not in an end stage capitalist society where a whole lot of folks struggle to survive while a whole lot fewer folks wallow in wealth beyond imaginings. My BP doesn’t even rise over Walgreens getting hit with shoplifting sprees, but I lose sleep thinking of all the souls and lives destroyed by nearly unfettered American capitalism.

If people are hungry, I want to feed them; I have given plenty of money over the years to people who said they were hungry. Some of those people were probably lying to me, but that is on them. By the way, I plan to look into the possibility of meal coupons for Wendy's and MacDonald's. Hunger is the only reason for stealing; nothing else is acceptable.
I don't believe that punishment will eliminate crime; there will always be criminals. At most, it can be managed and kept down. However, it appears that in San Francisco and other liberal cities, crime is not being managed.. The inmates have taken over the asylum.

Please look into prepaid gift cards redeemable at local grocery stores, or at very least, give them coupons to Subway or someplace else where the food has some actual nutritional value.

Liberty--liberals? What are they? Liberal Cities? Where are they? Please!
The top cities for "organized retail crime"--primarily shoplifting but includes other thefts:
Los Angeles
New York City
Houston
Miami
Atlanta
Chicago
Orlando
San Francisco/Oakland
Orange County, Calif.
Northern New Jersey
Which of these are "liberal"? Houston in Texas? Miami in Florida? Both had significant Trump votes in 2020 (not to mention Miami's republican mayor)e. And Orange County, Orlando , Northern NJ, even a New York county are hardly "liberal", many are represented by republican congresspersons. Are they liberal?
