Recycled entertainment

Post by BoSoxGal »

Which are the TV series that you have watched and rewatched, if any?

Mine are:
Prime Suspect
Wallander (Kenneth Branagh)
Nurse Jackie

Normally I don’t watch series more than once because there is so much content out there to watch, but these three shows are just something entirely above and beyond. It’s the tortured central characters who are so fascinating and the brilliant actors who portray them.

I also watched The Sopranos twice, but I am unlikely to ever watch it again. Maybe because Gandolfini is dead, it just made me too sad watching it the second time around.

Firefly
The Pretender
Battlestar Galactica (the reboot, not the original)

Multiple Star Trek series, of course.

I have all those (and others) on DVD so I can watch them any time I want, even if the internet is down.

Six Feet Under
The West Wing
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel (its spinoff) to a lesser extent

If miniseries count:
Band of Brothers
Roots and Roots: The Next Generations

When I need to laugh:
Mary Tyler Moore
The Golden Girls

These are also among my DVD collection because I knew I would be watching them again and again.

Six Feet under jumped the shark bad. I can’t think of a series Alan Ball did that after a few excellent seasons didn’t decend into “drama porn”
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

I watch The West Wing annually or so. I’ll also rewatch episodes of Top Chef and TGBBS. I’ve also watched each season of The Crown twice.

I generally don't rewatch series, especially those I have to pay attention to, but I will sometimes put a sitcom on in the background if I am working on something that doesn't take concentration; the sitctoms I will watch this way include The Honeymooners, Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond, and That 70s Show and, sometimes, Man vs Food (at least before the gluttony/hot sauce challenges.

Oooh Law & Order should have been on my list, even though I don’t think of it as the same as many series because the focus is generally on one story at a time rather than a character development over time. I have certainly seen every episode at least three or four times because the show is run on marathons on several cable channels and I’ve had a number of clients who watched it routinely. I’m also known to turn it on when I want something other than news on in the background of cooking or other tasks and prefer something I don’t have to pay close attention to.

I just saw the other day that NBC is bringing back the original Law & Order later this month. Sam Waterston is still the DA with Hugh Dancy as ADA.

Is that the one with that nice Chris Noth as a cop?

FWIW, the original Law and Order is one of the few lawyer shows I can watch; it's not always realistic, but at least it appears to have some people on the writing staff who have at least known a lawyer. I also like the British law and order, but then I have no idea how accurately it portrays the British system.

I also like that Law and Order presents a story/stories which are resolved by the end of the show, but this is becoming fairly rare among shows. I think I am one of the few viewers who prefers that format.

Ouch!

I was definitely a Chris Noth fan when he first appeared on L&O in the 90s and was disappointed to learn he’s another date rapist.

I’ve learned a lot about both men and cops since I was 20 - most of it illusion shattering, sad to say. How I feel about both has changed considerably in the intervening 30+ years.

My only real beef with L&O (obviously it’s not like real life because the legal system never works as quickly as it does in the show, but the reality of slowly grinding wheels of justice don’t make for good TV drama, just good real life drama) is that it went from being a fairly complex commentary on the law/law enforcement in early seasons to being fairly formulaic white hats v. bad guys in later seasons. I much prefer the early seasons for that reason, and to some degree I blame the show, which is iconic in our culture, for perpetuating a very simplistic concept of the criminal justice system mid 90s on which is nothing like reality. The show, like most centered on law enforcement, is far more popular with conservatives than with liberals doubtless for this very reason.

I’ve been battling a migraine for the last two days and as I usually do in such times, I’ve been rewatching a favorite series. When I have a migraine I can’t sleep or read or concentrate well at all, so I don’t watch anything new since my attention is always compromised. I watch (or rather listen to, since my vision is compromised and looking at light sources hurts) something well loved that I can drift in and out of depending on level of pain.

Anyway I’m watching Kenneth Branagh’s Wallander for the 7th or 8th time and just reminded again what a really brilliant series it is. Anyone who enjoys a complex character study and also enjoys murder mysteries should watch the series if they haven’t already. It’s available on HBOMAX but lots of other places too - on Amazon Prime with BritBox I think, only $5/month or something like that. The show is 4 series with 3 episodes, each of which is under 2 hours - so it’s not a huge time commitment like many American TV series are. I really think it is one of the most brilliant things Kenneth Branagh has ever done and he’s done some very brilliant things.

Yes, about 25 years ago when it first came on the market. It didn’t work for me but I was well into a protracted and excruciating migraine when the ER doc administered the injectable.

I actually use another triptan as my abortive - rizatriptan which was initially sold under the brand name Maxalt. I’ve been using it for a couple of decades now and it is very effective about 70-75% of the time which is pretty good compared to clinical studies results. I always take it as soon as the headache emerges and in keeping with neurologist advice I pair it with an NSAID as well. Sometimes it just doesn’t ‘take’ long-term - the headache will back off and it seems like it’s going to resolve and then comes roaring back. Because of the risk of stroke you can only take 3 doses in 24 hours so sometimes I end up in a cycle of pain with brief periods of relent that goes on for days. I’m on day 3 of this migraine and have had to be shut in because daylight and activity and sounds and smells can all be exacerbating factors.

After menopause my migraines reduced significantly, but I recently went on HRT and have had an uptick in migraine activity. It’s a difficult balance but the HRT has me sleeping well for the first time in a decade so that takes precedence. I’m planning to ask my GP about some of the newer migraine meds that have emerged in the last few years to see about trying one of them, especially if this uptick continues.

Migraines suck. I have literally lost over a decade of my life to them.

Migraines do suck. This may be old news for you, BSG, but after my last awful (5-day) migraine bout, my Nurse Practitioner prescribed an anti-nausea med and suggested I take it the first signs of migraine. I have found that it works at least 50% of the time in staving them off or limiting them to a one-day event.

Mine seemed to be mostly hormone or weather driven, and are better, but still not gone.

I just stumbled across something called "the Newsroom" on you tube. I have never heard of the show before. It is clip called 'the three most honest minutes on television.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML3qYHWRIZk

Yes it is completely scripted. But so is Hamlet and Macbeth and they are filled with stuff that is supposed to be both enlightening and entertaining.
Some of the comments describe the character as a Trump supporter. I don't see it that way.

Interesting to me is that I call my self a liberal and a Democrat; yet I agree with all 'he' says in this clip. I am gonna have to look up this tv show.

It’s a great show, I’ve watched it twice. Jeff Daniels is terrific in it.
