Oh, The Horror ! !

Everything I know, I learned from Newspaper comic strips. For example, for basic theology I rely on Mammy Yokum from Li'l Abner: "Good is better than evil 'cause it's nicer."

When I tried to get the daily strips from Washington Post this morning,, nothing happened. I went to the home page of a particular strip [Frazz, for you current or former Michiganders] and got this message:

"The requested service is temporarily unavailable. It is either overloaded or under maintenance. Please try later."

Then I went to my online comic web page and got THE SAME MESSAGE !

Has western civilization been hit by a Chinese denial of service attack?

Should I break out my zombie apocalypse reserve supplies?

I just checked out Gocomics.com — which I have bookmarked — and got the same message.   However, Slipshine.com — a subscription site that features, shall we say, cartoons with an adult theme? — is still up and running...
Draw your own conclusions.

We’re the Ohio bill f’d up is instead of actually being bi /non partisan it tried to hide some back doors in it (and I believe there may also be some constitutional differences between the two states).

Sunday Evening. Just check WaPo and my online service. No change. I am going to take two aspirins and go to bed. If there is no change tomorrow morning, then I will go to a local (Not many around any more) news stand and get a Sunday paper before they get rid of them.

Got to the newsstand and got a Philly sunday paper. Comics online still dead. A while back there was a strike by the authors/artists but that had publicity and some independents/non-syndicated were still online then. No info this time.

The GoComics website is down, I wonder if that has anything to do with it? Maybe WashPo sources through GoComics.

Went to Google and found this in response to a search "Why is Gocomics site down"...
The GoComics Website Is Experiencing Technical Issues — What's Going On?

What actually happened to GoComics is unclear, but what's apparent is that the site is down, at least for now.  If you attempt to navigate to it, you'll likely get the following message: "The requested service is temporarily unavailable.  It is either overloaded or under maintenance.  Please try later."

"We’re sorry our systems are down!" the site's Twitter account said on Nov. 20.  "We’re working hard to fix the issue.  We will provide a status update when available.  Thank you for your patience."  They have not provided another update as of this writing (10:50 AM ET on 11/21), so it's unclear when the site may be back up.  Naturally, some people are now complaining online about the prolonged issue.

The outage is clearly affecting plenty of people, and given that many of them pay for a subscription to the site, it seems like they're expecting to be compensated on the back end for the issues the site is experiencing now.  GoComics has not offered any additional explanation as to why the site is down, although some have speculated that they're experiencing a ransomware attack that is keeping the site offline.

So BP's initial assumption of a Chinese-backed DDoS attack might not be that far off the mark.

A GoComics subscription is $1.99/mo. - an incredible bargain if you’re a cartoons person. Any asshat who asks to be reimbursed for an outage of a few days needs to get a life outside mom’s basement.

no change Monday evening. I AM inspecting my Zombie go bag. Filled the car gas tank this afternoon. Spent 3 hours with my adult daughter this afternoon, telling her family stories she had not heard. (for real!) So she could pass them on with her own embellishments to her children.

Yes, I am giving thanks that the comics are back, for whatever reason they were on hiatus, I am grateful they are back.

And to celebrate, I give you a link to a Sunday comic that educates as to the best use of a phillips screwdriver for the holiday season:

I was thinking it would have been to poke down the poptop in a beer can when you can't get a good enough grip on the little tab.
Used to always work for me, anyway.

Three of my favorite strips ran tributes to Peanuts today. One called Charlie Brown the greatest fictional character of the 20th century

Which three?  I'm guessing Doonesbury, B.C., and Beetle Bailey ... three of the longest-running remaining strips I can think of.
Although I could see the Wizard of Id, For Better or Worse, and maybe Pearls Before Swine also paying homage.

eta: Well, I was right with all three ... also found tributes from the other three I mentioned (Wizard, Better or Worse, and Pearls), as well as Adam @ Home, Shoe, Family Circus, Hi and Lois, Pluggers, Hagar the Horrible, Lola, and Ziggy... from A to Z, just about any strip you can think of.  I dare say if I still got the printed paper — and if they actually ran a real comics page any more — three-quarter or more of them would have done something.

Here's a link — https://apnews.com/article/cartoonists- ... 96ceb5aa90 — to an article about the concerted effort that resulted in today's tsunami of tribute strips.

I was surprised, however, to see that Bloom County was AWOL ... unless Breathed is waiting until tomorrow (Sunday) for even more exposure.

The three I saw were in 'For Better or Worse' 'Pearls before swine' (that is the one with the greatest fictional character comment) and Shoe. These are not my three most favorite, just among the ones I check each day.

I think Breathed is working on an animated tv project. He has been away for about a couple of years, Go doesn't even run new repeats.
