I don't want to scare burglars off; I want to put them in jail.

What would you need an alarm system for? Don't those report to the police or a third party like ADT or Brinks, who then sends either the police or their own rent-a-cop out to check the matter? I thought you were a descendant of the people of the steppes; one of the last of those macho men whose attitude was never trust the cops to do what a good man with a gun can do for himself.

Or is the alarm system just to tell you where and when you're being 'invaded' so you can set up your ambush in the proper place?"

I have no interest in being a macho man, whatever that means, and I have never had. I'm not even a particularly violent person. But, I was as prepared to kill people during the Cold War. But it turned out I didn't have to, which doesn't bother me. Sometimes violence is what the situation calls for, and when that's what's needed, I can do it. But I'm just as happy to let the sheriff do his job; actually, I prefer it.

And as far as my steppe ancestors go, they fought to protect their lands because that's what they needed to do. Generally, the men fought, and the women cared for the children, but that wasn't always the case. Some women were warriors, and even some were queens. So, I wonder if they had a concept of macho or not. I suspect they were practical people who did not let such ideas interfere with what made sense. Anything that made them stronger was good, and anything that made them weaker was bad. They had to be strong to keep their grazing lands; if they lost them, life was perilous. Then starvation and extermination were real possibilities.

You're oversimplifying this, liberty.  Would I put up a sign?  Probably not... but it's not because I'm so concerned about my neighbors, but because I don't want to advertise to the potential thief that there IS security in place.  Who knows what his next move might be?  Cut the power or phone lines to try to disable it?  Knock on the door and put a gun in my ribs, demanding that I deactivate the alarm?  Or just shoot me dead, once the door is opened, and loot the place at his leisure?

I do, however, tend to keep my doors and windows locked; I also lock my car doors when I walk away from it, and I very rarely leave my bicycle unlocked when I get off it, either.  I'm not so naive as to think that this is going to keep me 100% safe and secure; I realize that if someone wants something badly enough there ain't a lock that's yet been created that will deter them.  My intent is to make it so that the casual criminal cannot just open up my car and rifle through the glove compartment, or walk into my place and help themselves to whatever they might find, or throw their leg over my bicycle and leave me afoot.  Make them move on and find easier prey.

Hw do I answer this poll? I would warn the thief to not steal from me or any one else. I would persuade the individual to change their activities into some thing more useful and to the betterment of the whole community.

And teach the lion to eat straw.

It is normal to take legally permissible steps to deter people-with-ill-intent from breaking into and entering one's abode.

It is immoral to encourage said people to break into and enter someone else's abode.

It is abnormal to post stupid polls if one's handle is not lib

I didn't answer the poll because "the village idiot is an attention whore" wasn't one of the options.
