Ted Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber, has been found dead in his prison cell, federal officials confirmed to the BBC.

Kaczynski, 81, killed three people and injured 23 more during a mass mail-bombing spree between 1978 and 1995. He later pleaded guilty to his crimes.

He was sentenced to life without parole in 1996 after evading capture for almost 20 years.

No cause of death has been cited as yet.

He committed suicide, but they have not released information as by what method. He was obviously already seriously ill having been medically transported from Colorado to the federal medical prison in North Carolina a couple of years ago.

I think even Ted K would appreciate the thread title.

He was a woke, progressive, Eastern liberal elitist, a martyr to the culture wars.

I am reminded of the brief scene in the movie, Doctor Zhivago, in the prison train car, where an Anarchist, totally shackled, screams that I am a free man.

I am also reminded of a large billboard right now on US Hiway 40 West, in Delaware, advertising jobs available for 'Corrections Officers" in Maryland. Our USofA prison and justice system has very low priorities or expectations of any corrections.

What a peculiar assertion coming from someone whose contributions here are usually not.

Ted K was a brilliant schizophrenic. Although his violent acts were abhorrent and unjustified, his was a brilliant mind and his manifesto is acknowledged to be well reasoned and continues to be relevant.
The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation.
I am saddened by the life of Ted K, another wasted by our misunderstanding of mental illness. Had he been diagnosed and provided proper interventions at early ages, he may have led a life of meaningful contribution to society and fulfilling personal relationships. Of course we have not advanced much in terms of how we meet and treat mental disorders so there are many lives being wasted all around us every day and some of them doubtless are also wasted geniuses like Ted K.

BSG, yes it is a strange statement. We are living in strange times. Those same words have been used to describe me. When I read that about me, I had to go to my closet and check if there were any Earth Shoes there. Even tho I never owned a Volvo, I have lived on the East Coast for more than half a century. It is something in the air/water here. Any faithful follower of Q can explain it, even tho I can't.

We need more Correction Officers to show us how to do proper penitence in the Penitentiary. Riders Island may be the proper role model, even if it s in the socialist/communist New York City.

Here’s a piece about his suicide - he was suffering late stage cancer.
