Perhaps, but one should not expect that they are exempt from criticism after they express an opinion. Personally, I don't really care what a novelist says about this issue, but I am not going to support substance of that opinion either. And FWIW, I don't think that morality requires hwer to speak out regarding nay of her opinions; she is free to do so, but I see no moral imperative (then again, I have no reason to think of someone who rights books about magic and wizards as being an intellectual, public or otherwise; the books are popular, but then so what; The Art of the Deal was popular too and that author is no intellectual).
