And then some adenoidal typists from Birmingham with diarrhea
and flabby white legs and hairy bandy-legged wop waiters called
Manuel, and then, once a week there's an excursion to the local
Roman ruins where you can buy cherry-ade and melted ice cream and
bleedin' Watney's Red Barrel, and then one night they take you
to a local restaurant with local color and coloring and they
show you there and you sit next to a party of people from Rhyl
who keep singing 'Torremolinos, Torremolinos', and complaining
about the food, 'Oh! It's so greasy isn't it?' and then you get
cornered by some drunken greengrocer from Luton with an
Instamatic and Dr Scholl sandals and Tuesday's 'Daily Express'
and he drones on and on about how Mr Smith should be running
this country and how many languages Enoch Powell can speak and
then he throws up all over the Cuba Libres.

I have a sister who lives in Fayetteville AR. Mrs Mc and I drove there Sunday evening after boarding a dog when the kennel finally opened at 4:00 Sunday afternoon. It's not a bad five hour drive, especially since the Oklahoma turnpike has newly a posted speed limit of 80 MPH. I was going 80-85, and being passed. We spent the night in Fayetteville, and then drove about 2-1/2 hours south and east for totality. On an normal day it would have been an hour, but the traffic was stop and go, and stop and go 75 MPH, and stop again. Another sister and her husband who live in Tulsa joined us.

It was our second total eclipse. We only had to drive three hours north, in easy traffic, for the 2017 show. I drove my church's fancy bus with 32 passengers. Some asked if I was going to drive it again. My sister's house is big, but not that big. Motel and hotel reservations in the area were sold out a year ago.

Both eclipses were pretty much as described above. My only change would have been to go somewhere that the street lights didn't come on. We thought about Jerusalem AR, but were afraid that a town of 128 people might not even have public restrooms, or porta pottys which were in abundance in Clarksville.

I spoke to retired a cousin who lives in southern Vermont, very near the NY border, yesterday. He and his wife went up the western edge of VT to Burlington on two lane highways, and continued up I-89 almost to the border. Long trip, but they were home about 9:00. Friends of his went north on I-91 and found the traffic was so bad going back south that they didn't get home until 3:00 AM.

I could have driven over to Dallas and back in one day, I've done it before, but I didn't care enough to do it. It was just a shadow; I've seen all I want from video, and I can imagine the rest. I was more concerned about the few people who may not know any better than to stare directly at the sun.

However, it was good for the economy. I didn't contribute to the economy, but a lot of people got on the bandwagon. I have never been influenced by hype myself. If the economy depended on me, we would have a depression.
I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

Does the India overland holiday package include Watney's Red Barrel?

Well, you'd better see Mr. Bounder about that.

(I think I have posted that as an image - my Mac sometimes has trouble with these so someone will have to let me know if that works. It should be an image of a shadow on my neighbor's garage wall.)

Here in Louisville it is a short drive to totality (Indianapolis is an hour or so away) but I stayed home. I have seen three total eclipses and the 2017 one my driveway (Columbia MO) was about 10 miles from the center line.

My favorite part of any eclipse - partial or total - is when a tree starts acting like multiple pinhole cameras. The shadow of the tree shows dozens or hundreds of images of the attenuated sun as crescents on the ground. I love that phenomenon and watch for it.

Did you ever think it might have been a Greyhound? Thanks for the input.
