He (or she) is a little over 3 inches long. I've never seen a moth this big. Google helped me determine that it's the Carolina Sphinx Moth.
Have you ever met one? Apparently it's bad news if you're growing tomatoes or tobacco. This video gives a good perspective of how large the creature actually is...
