We had one next door in Rhode Island, but it happened on Mother’s Day and in that case it was the guy’s drunk friends who put a firework on his drunk head and blew it up. He had a young son who might have been at the residence when it happened, reports are murky.

Who needs enemies with friends that dumb?

It's stuff like this that makes health care for all a tough sell.   There's a lot of people on both sides of the fence who feel, and justifiably so, that the public shouldn't have to pay to take care of someone stupid enough to use his noggin as ground zero for a fireworks display.

True enough - but then how do you manage for someone who speeds in their car; or smokes; or scuba dives; or whatever slightly (?) risky behavior they have; and has a medical event? I think we'd all agree that putting a rocket in your hat was way outside whatever line you might draw. I saw a video of a fireworks incident based on stunning stupidity where it looks as if no-one was badly hurt, but the family car was probably a write-off. We probably all pay for higher insurance rates because others have a greater tolerance of idiotic behavior.

Beyond all the sound assertions Andy made, there is little cost to the public involved to take care of someone who used his noggin as ground zero for a fireworks display - depending on jurisdiction, we're talking about a grand more or less for the ambulance ride to the morgue, with at most a 15 minute stop in the ER to get pronounced by an MD.

Point taken BSG, although if he didn't die and just had significant neural or brain or other physical damage, the cost could be quite considerable; and Bill, we all (well most of us) already do pay for this through our health insurance premiums, whether private or through our employers already--either directly or through the charity care fees our insurers are forced to pay (and eventually pass on to us through premiums)--that's just the way insurance works.

That's the one I was referencing three or four posts ago, BSG. I can't tell how much damage there was to the minivan and I am thankful to hear from the news report that no-one was hurt. Looks as if the women were the ones with the common sense to (a) keep an eye on things just in case and (b) remove the kids ASAP.

I should probably add testosterone to the mix of chemicals that usually ends badly.
