Theories here, please.

I think the least likely explanation is the 'China did it' one. Apart from anything else, China probably has good satellite technology and can peer into military installations when they want. And why on earth would they do it at night and have navigation lights on their drones?
Anyone can go to Amazon or Best Buy and pick up a pretty fancy drone for $500 or less. Add to that the lure of getting your 'content' onto FB or YT or IG or wherever = glory and $$ - there's your answer.

I think the ones in central NJ probably have something to do with the Trump golf course/home in Bedminster; not sure exactly what, but I wouldn't be surprised if either the government or Trump's private security is checking out the use of drones for security. On the other hand, I also wouldn't be surprised, if a bunch of people bought drones like Andy suggested and use them to buzz the property (at least until some sort of no fly zone is declared).

So it seems like all the furor is over . . . nothing.
Many people, it appears, are unfamiliar with the flying objects and other things - like stars - which fill the night sky.
Even a former governor who doesn't know Orion's belt or other stars that have lived above him in the night sky his entire life.
