The Trump Effect at Home Depot

For as long as I can remember, every time I've gone to or driven by Home Depot I've seen 20 or more Latinos at locations throughout the parking lot who are obviously there in hope of finding work.

Today it is sunny and about 62 degrees outside and there's nobody there.

Did Trump scare them away?

My guess is they went elsewhere; these people need to work to eat and will do what they have to do. When I worked in the immigration area, those "hiring" areas often moved and those who routinely hired the workers (or who used those sites to contact them) knew where they were. Generally, the police left them alone unless the neighbors complained (and most did not), but ICE could be a problem, which is why the sites often shifted (of course, this was in my area--in others ICE may have ignored them as well.

My patient's sister (his surrogate, with whom he lives) needs a new washing machine and I told her not to dally too long picking one out because the next Trump effect on Home Depot and other big box and smaller appliance stores will be kicking in soon enough, better to get the washer for a few hundred less than after the magical TARIFFS kick in.

Yup, Trump will screw up the economy with his idiotic tariffs, and blame Biden for higher prices. But look what we'll be getting for all that trouble--absolutely nothing except more asinine rhetoric. And his supporters will lap it up.

Yep. All this cancelled spending, paid vacations 'til Labor Day for federal employees, stop all actions in Africa to control any disease, change all kinds of rules for the military, cancel the visas for our loyal local supporters in Afghanistan. . . All justified for an imagined emergency and the needs of national security. Isn't there something in that oath of office about execute the law?

Now we know why he did NOT put his hand on the stack of bibles when he took that oath.

My landscaper/handyman (a guy from South America with a green card I helped him get) told me that the word on the street is that people are being taken into custody by ICE at Home Depot, and the rumor is that Home Depot is cooperating to coordinate these arrests. Most undocumented persons will not enter Home Depot at all.

Somehow, I doubt Home Depot would cooperate the way the rumors say being how much undocumented people work in the construction and landscape industries and are needed to get supplies. My guess is that they will lose a lot of business to smaller local lumber yards and supply and garden centers, but time will tell. IMHO, it's pretty silly of Home Depot, but who knows what pressures have been brought to bear--maybe a pardon for someone was offered? An ambassadorship of government position? Some sort of exclusive infrastructure supply agreement?

Not that it has anything to do with it, but Home Despot's owner/CEO was a BIG Trump supporter. I'll probably continue to us Slowes.
