How does someone catch on fire from a small flame

Post by liberty »

How does someone catch on fire from a small flame and not tear their clothes off before being burned to death? Were the clothes soaked in oil, did she use gasoline to start the fire? She could have been caught in the flashback from the gasoline fumes. Even then, shouldn't she have pulled the clothes off?

Perhaps I'm guilty of judging the situation based on what I would have done. I caught on fire once, and I tore off my pant leg to put out the flames.

She may have been soaked with a combustible liquid. If she was engulfed in flames, rolling on the ground would probably be more effective than attempting to undress.

And if you hadn't been dancing around the campfire in your Levis with a bottle of open moonshine in your hand, you wouldn't be wearing them one long and one short-legged jeans today.

What're you talkin' 'bout, moonshine? We cain't afford that fancy stuff, and we can barely afford water. We cain't even drink our own water 'cause it's so full o' Yankee mess. We're so poor, we gotta accept yer refuge, yer sewage.

I got me several spots out in the swamp where I collect water from hollowed-out deck tree trunks.

Well, I best let ya go. We gotta skin this here muskrat for supper tumorro.

Lib--I would also think the fire could be based on what she was wearing--some clothing could go up quite easily, others are more falme resistant. The biggest problem is that once someone caches fire the instinct is to run, further fanning (and intensifying) . the flames. Dropping and rolling, as Joe pointed out, would be much better, but doing that is not instinctive (hence the drop and roll drills taught in first aid and school courses). And as for trying to undress, you'd likely be taking your skin off as well as it will quickly adhere to your clothes oncce the fire begins.

Joe may also be right about a combustible liquid being involved as well. The story doesn't say what caused the fire, but if it was made for a reason (such a a bonfire or for cooking) people often use accelerants/firestarters to get this sort of fire going and if they are not careful they could get it on them (often people even hold the can in their hands and squirt it on open flames and, while there are saefety devices (like flame arresters) incorporated in the cans. Or perhaps she was freebasing. Or someone soaked her in gasoline and set her afire. Or... We just don't know based on the facts presented in the story.

But when I worked in the ER, I can recall a number of times people were seriously burned around their households by accidents, sometimes involving accelerants, other times not.

Probably tried to believe a Trump message on Truth without wearing fireproof trousers
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts
