Born in 1934 in Riverton, New Zealand, Peter Arnett later naturalized as an American citizen and had lived in southern California since 2014.
Edith Lederer, a former colleague who still works at AP, told the agency: "Peter Arnett was one of the greatest war correspondents of his generation - intrepid, fearless, and a beautiful writer and storyteller.
"His reporting in print and on camera will remain a legacy for aspiring journalists and historians for generations to come."
Yes, another voice is silent. Thank God there are more like him

A good friend of a good friend recently died - I'm not going to identify him because my friend has not given me permission to do so. He was a war photographer, one of the best. You wouldn't know his name, but if I posted some of his photos I am certain that some of you would recognize two or three of them.
As Meade said: I am glad there are more like him. I am glad that there are people who run towards gunfire so that the rest of us can see how unglamorous war is. How normal people like you and me who want a better life for our children can be caught up in it, and they do not carry the hatred that their leaders tell them to: nevertheless they pay the price in blood and sweat and treasure and terror and lost dreams.
War sucks. Arnett knew that and my friend's friend knew that.
