Sex, Skype and the front line

A WATERSHED moment for women in Australia's armed services has been achieved as a result of a cadet sex scandal, with female staff set to be able to serve in front-line roles sooner and the creation of a suite of inquiries and reviews to tackle Defence's chauvinistic culture.

The announcements came as the head of the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), Commodore Bruce Kafer, was sent on leave over his role in the Skype affair, in which an 18-year-old female cadet's sexual encounter with a male colleague was broadcast over the internet without her consent. Commodore Kafer was told when he returned to work it may be in a different role.

The announcements come after a week of negative publicity and complaints about a culture of sex abuse and bastardry within the defence forces, which were all sparked by the cadet's decision to take her case to the media.

The most important of the cultural inquiries, a review of how women are treated at ADFA, will be led by the Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Elizabeth Broderick, and will build on the Defence Force's Women's Advisory Group.

Other inquiries include:

A ''cultural stocktake'' of alcohol and binge drinking, the use of social media and personal conduct in the Defence Force;

A review by the Inspector-General of the ADF into the management of incidents and complaints within Defence, with specific attention regarding the treatment of victims;

An independent review of the dozens of allegations of sexual abuse and bastardry raised since the Skype scandal erupted, and

A panel of university vice-chancellors and college heads to examine issues around the behaviour and culture of residential university students.

A former senior air force officer turned military law expert, Andrew Kirkham, QC, was also appointed to inquire into the management of the Skype incident.

Oh boy, it's all coming out in the wash...

THE Australian Defence Force has failed to discipline dozens of serving members allegedly linked to an online gay-hate campaign, according to newspaper reports.

The ADF received a complaint eight months ago about a Facebook page created to expose and intimidate what the page called "bum bandits getting around the ADF", Fairfax newspapers reported on Thursday.

The ADF and the office of the former defence minister John Faulkner received the formal complaint in August, the reports said.

However, since then the investigation into the social networking page and the dozens of personnel who signed on as "friends" has been shelved and no one has been punished.

The page - which is believed to have been taken down - allegedly had links to violent videos on YouTube.

Fairfax reported that the ADF investigation stalled because of inadequate resources.

Next it will be the bastardisation scandal of the 50s and 80s all over again.

Hmm. We seem to have a thirty year cycle occurring.

Retirement plan anyone?

What happened in the 50's and 80's? other than me being born (in the 50's) and getting married (in the 80's)

The 50s and the 80s saw bastardisation scandals hit the attention of the public. In both case enquiries were had which came out with a set of rules to ensure that the bastardisation crap could not happen again.
