Son writes off his dad's £275,000 supercar
A 20-year-old has written off his dad's £275,000 Gumpert Apollo after taking it for a spin in Germany.
He lost control of the rear wheel drive supercar on a sharp bend near Brokdorf, just north of Hamburg.
After the crash the driver's door ended up 100ft (30m) away and the car was described as a "total loss".
The man was driving with a 19-year-old female passenger and both of them walked away from the accident with minor injuries.
Police are investigating whether he was speeding when he lost control of the car on the 50mph road.
The Gumpert Apollo has a top speed of 225mph (360kph) and goes from 0 to 60mph in less than three seconds.

Ow.
A similar thing happen outside the Hatch's college the other day. Only the car was only worth around $70,000.
I certainly hope this father had the right insurance. (The one over here didn't.)

Even if he didn't let the boy drive it, he'd better say he did or the insurance might not pay.

'Yeah, it's fixable. Couple of new wheels, bit o' welding here and there, axle off the back of a Ford Mondeo, spoiler off a Corsair, bumpers, lick of paint, couple of rivets, new radiator, Call it $150 bucks, cash only, mate..."

The boy in question at Hatch's college didn't have his father's permission to take the car. Maybe this lad didn't have permission either?

Insurance?
Have you ever tried to insure an exotic car?
A friend had a Lotus Esprit and never locked the doors because if they broke the windows to steal the stereo it cost several hundred (and you had to wait weeks for them to be shipped from England) and the deductible on affordable insurance was over $1,000 back then, 1982.
Insurance for something like this costs so much that its not worth it. Affording something like this means you don't have insurance.

It's not about the money...
A counselor friend of mine, tells the tale about one of her clients who has a son that 'acts out'. He buys this son expensive toys like fast cars, etc., but never has the time to actually engage his kid personally because of 'work conflicts'. No surprise the kid has wreck, after wreck of these expensive toys, as a plea for attention from his father.

Except when it's against the law not to have insurance if you want to register it and drive it on the public roads as it is in NY state and I would guess in Ca too (and I do believe Germany has similar laws).
At $275,000, if you can afford the car, you can afford the insurance.

You have to have liability coverage, not collision coverage.

You are required to have LIABILITY insurance, insurance to cover the losses or injury of another, you might be required to have medical insurance for yourself but you are not required to have collision or comprehensive coverage unless you borrowed the money (and hence you don't own the car, the bank does).
You would think that even a towtruck driver like Jarl would know something this basic ...

Tee hee - nowhere near as dramatic but my wife just was at the drive-in insurance claims center to have our hail-damaged bakkie inspected (18,000 Rands is is now), went to a store next door and as she backed out she drove into another woman's car. Drove back next door again. I was calm

I thought of the liability (needed) vs collision (optional) after I logged out. my bad
Although, usualy if there is any kind of loan on the car, they insist on some minimum of collision coverage.
