GO PATRICK!!!!

This is Patrick Chan, the Canadian men's national figure skating champion, after his short program at the 2011 Worlds being held this week in Moscow:
Image

He's happy because he just scored a new world record 93.02 points for his short program. That's an 11 point lead over his nearest competitor, which means that, barring a complete meltdown in the long program, the men's gold will be coming back to Canada this year.  :ok

It's particularly sweet because he was being written off a couple of years ago (in spite of several strong showing including a silver at the Worlds) because he (they believed) didn't have a quad in his repetoire. What his detractors didn't know, is that he has been landing quads in practice for years, but decided not to introduce it into his competition programs until he was sure he could consistently nail it and had already fully refined the rest of his skating skills. He decided that this was the year, and the result was a gold at the Grand Prix final and, so it now appears, at the Worlds as well.

It's a shame, though, that neither Nobunari Oda nor Daisuke Takahashi from Japan appear to be skating at their best; I wonder if their training has been impacted by the earthquake/tsunami (which caused the Worlds to be relocated to Moscow from Tokyo). On the other hand, it was satisfying to see Brian Joubert from France completely fuck up his short program and place ninth (particularly a quad toe which earned him a -3 grade of execution, since his gums were among those flapping the most about Chan not attempting a quad. Chad's quad combination, OTOH, was the only quad in the competition to earn a positive GOE from the judges).

Ryan Bradley, the U.S. champion who was a surprise winner at the U.S. nationals a few months back, is currently in 12th place, which if it holds up would be his best ever showing at a world championship. Quite a comeback considering he was planning to retire this year.

He's happy
He's happy?

That facial expression seems to convey "I just got kicked in the balls" more than, "I'm happy".... :D

In another amazing performance from the Worlds...

Canadian pairs skater Eric Radford got his nose broken by his partner Megan Duhamel when she elbowed him in the face on the opening element of their program. He continued right through to the end of the program in pain and they ended up placing a respectable 7th. No one else realized anything was wrong until he came off the ice with blood running down his shirt. Still a wait and see on whether they will be competing in the long on Friday.

I wish I had the skillage to do more than just skate in a circle in either direction.

Personally, I reckon thaty is his 'sex face', and good on him for such an effort.

:D

I was thinking more along the lines of, "bowel blockage face"....

Or maybe, "passing a kidney stone face"....

Oh yeah, he's done it.

187.96 in the free skate (a new world record by about 12 points) for a total of 280.98 (also a new world record).

No one is going to catch that.

Chan brings back the gold for Canada!!

Damn, poor Daisuke Takahashi had a blade come loose from his skate boot near the start of his program. Got it screwed back on and managed to get back on the ice in time to continue but it put him out of medal contention.

Arse. I hate it when equipment failure changes the results in a sport like this.

Ok, if I get what Florent Amodio of France was trying to do, he just showed us what figure skating looks like to someone smoking crack.

So it's Chan, Takahiko Kozuka of Japan and Artur Gachinski of Russia.

Richard Dornbush of the U.S. comes in at a pretty amazing 9th place, considering this is his first ever international competition at the senior level.

Since the other picture didn't say "happy" to some people:

This one would work for a toothpaste commercial.

One of my best friends was an elite level figure skater and through him I got to know a lot of the people and have followed the sport for decades.

It can get dangerous. There was a skater who got her face slashed by her partner's skate blade when she fell while executing an element during practice.
