Never mind who wore what, the View's Sherri Shepherd had another more controversial question about the Royal Wedding today.



'Where are the black people?' the outspoken actress, 44, asked as the panellists critiqued Prince William and Kate Middleton's ceremony.

The star said she had earlier searched through the footage of guests at Westminster Abbey. Burning question: Sherri Shepherd was searching for black people at the Royal wedding on The View today
'Audrey Jones our producer was looking for the black people in the wedding and we found our Rosa Parks moment, because we were like 'where are the black people'?' she said.

'It was like where's Waldo, where are the black people?' she added. 'We found one little black child in the choir but where's the black people at this wedding?' she repeated.

'Wait a minute the Calvary guy, from New York,' said Goldie Hawn, 65, who was a guest host for the day. 'Well the guests, there they are,' said Sherri, pointing to an area in the Abbey reserved for foreign royals, Governor generals and high-level diplomats. 'They are segregated but they are at the front so we have our Rosa Parks moment,' she added referring to the African-American civil rights activist Rosa Parks who refused to obey a bus driver's order to give up her seat for a white passenger on December 1, 1955.

'I don't know why they put all the black people over here but they are at the front of the wedding so I ain't complaining, they got in the front,' added Sherri.

Can someone explain to this person, that the wedding was in the UK, (it's an island, just off Euro..never mind..) where it is not mandatory to have a percentage of black people at every event, or show, or public place, or team, or or club?

But I must admit that I asked the same subject-line question just yesterday at the cinema. We took three of the boys from Bolokanang for their birthday treat - lunch, movie and bowling (conveniently located within spitting distance of each other at Northridge shopping center - or Nordhoek if one prefers). They chose the movie - out of "The Eagle", some crap, "Hop" and "Thor". They chose #1 which would have been the Eagle (which I want to see) but I craftily bought tickets for Thor and pointed out that it was playing in theatre #1..... foxed them.

Anyway, we'd only been hanging around in Asgard for a bit when I turned to Mrs Meade and asked "Where are all the black people? Don't they go to Valhalla?" Thor's buddies of course were the obligatory oriental, chick, dumb big white guy and smart young white guy. It turned out that the gate keeper Heimdall is a big black guy. But of course he's just guarding the security gate - he doesn't get to go inside and have a beer.

Now the enemies - the Frost Giants of Jotunheim - all looked pretty durn black to me. With perhaps a bluey sort of tinge. But of course we all know the source of the blues - geddit?

But as I watched these three boys 9-11 years old, I wondered what (if anything) they noticed about the white man's world depicted on the screen. Even the frost giants turned white......

I should have let them watch The Eagle. At least they could have identified with the Scots.

Do you refer to me, rubato? I don't see how you reach that conclusion from my post which criticizes the movie Thor for its "whitebread" appearance causing me to wonder what message (if any) is perceived by some chldren I care for.

Acknowledging that the whole Odin thing is a white Scandinavian mythology (and presumably Valhalla would have been populated by Scandinavians), I am disappointed in this day and age that the movie did not bother to expand its concept to include all peoples. From Thor to Loki, from Asgard to Jotunheim, the imagery was consistently "blond/white good" - "black bad". Even on earth the "good" people were white people driving white cars while the "bad" people (the government of course) all wore black and drove black cars. Not even the bad guys were allowed to actually be black (actors).

I don't mind you calling me 'overtly racist' - if that's what you did. It just seems odd in connecetion with the points I was making, unless you mistook my cynicism about the film's attitudes for my own or are perhaps a Scot?

Well they couldn't have been watching all that flipping closely, several of the choirboys were black, asian and chinese - leading my cynical hubby to make a comment about whether they were truly christian families or just conveniently so for their children to get into a very good public school.

Did they not see the King of Tonga? What about the Arab guests don't they count?

ppht this is a complete NON story.

I haven't seen Thor ( I'm sure my geekmate will be telling me all about it soon) but I'm betting they ended it with a teaser about 'Assembling the Avengers' It's been at the end of most of the latest Marvel character movies, e.g. Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, but not the X-men, they never joined the Avengers. They're even putting it in the title of the next movie 'The First Avenger: Captain America' The studio is revamping and updating all their Golden Age Superheroes, up to and including making Sgt. Nick Fury a black man. I think that will work, as it's well casted by Samuel L. Jackson, a well known professional bad ass who looks good in an eye patch.

I seem to recall a truly awful remake of Kirk Douglas' The Vikings (I don't have time to try and find it now...my recollection is that it was made in either the late 70's or early 80's...I think it starred Lee Majors) that actually had a black Norseman...
