I saw a documentary on The Dead Sea Scrolls recently that included some film footage of a a guy who was examining these priceless relics back in the 1950s...
He was hunched over studying an original portion, with a magnifying glass in one hand and casually holding a lit cigarette inches above the text in the other....

Throw a lit cigarette in a pool of gasoline. You will see it doesn't light the gas. You need an open flame to light it.
And a cell phone cannot light the vapors of gas neither dialing out nor receiving a call. So all htose warnings not to use a cell phone while fueling are useless.
I love the Myth Busters.

The Myth busters built a box (basically a phone booth) and filled it with as much gasoline vapors as they could and remotely tried to detonate the vapors via a cell phone both making and receiving calls. Wouldn't light up.
And they threw a lit cigarette into a pool of gasoline and all it accomplished was snuffign out the cigarette.
Most gas station fires are attributed to a static electricity spark.

A spark os hardly an open flame but it powers the combustion in our engines heck diesel doesn't even use spark.

From what I remember, they did that also.
Of course your vapors are pretty much negligable at any gas station.

Depends on how hot and stagnant the air is.
But mind you these rules are in place to prevent the freak occurrences which in the light of the multitudes of fill ups that go on during any given day make them not so rare.
