A husband has vowed to keep his wife indoors after she became the first woman in Italy to be fined for wearing a burka in public.

Amel Marmouri, 26, was handed the 500 euro (£430) penalty after she was spotted queuing inside a post office by police with her body and face fully covered by the garment.

She was warned she would receive another fine if she were spotted again in her burka.

Yesterday her husband said as a result he had no option but to stop her from going out.

Unemployed Ben Salah Braim, 36, said: 'I just don't know where we are going to get 500 euros to pay the fine.

'We thought as she was going to the mosque she was OK to wear the burka.

'We knew about the law and I know that (the law) is not against my religion but now Amel will have to stay indoors. I can't have other men looking at her.

'If the law says she can't wear one then she will have to stay inside night and day. There is nothing I can do.'

Under Italian anti-terrorist legislation, introduced during the 1970s to fight political activists, it is illegal to be seen in a public place with your face covered.

Burqa bandit in armed cash grab

A gunman wearing a full black burqa and sunglasses got away with a bag of cash following an armed robbery in a Sydney car park, police say.

The burqa bandit and an accomplice allegedly stalked their 35-year-old victim after he withdrew a large amount of cash from a shopping centre in Miranda, in the city's south, about 5pm yesterday.

The victim drove to another shopping centre in Hurstville before the man wearing a burqa - traditionally only worn by women in the Islamic culture - drew his gun, grabbed the cash and fled.

Police are looking for two men who are about 20- to 25-years-old, of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance and about 170cm tall.

The second robber wore a white cap, blue-shirt and faded jeans.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.

France's lower house of parliament has overwhelmingly approved a bill that would ban wearing the Islamic full veil in public.

There were 335 votes for the bill and only one against in the 557-seat National Assembly.

It must now be ratified by the Senate in September to become law.

The ban has strong public support but critics point out that only a tiny minority of French Muslims wear the full veil.

Many of the opposition Socialists, who originally wanted the ban limited only to public buildings, abstained from voting after coming under pressure from feminist supporters of the bill.

President Nicolas Sarkozy has backed the ban as part of a wider debate on French identity but critics say the government is pandering to far-right voters.

I hope the same laws are implemented here. You can be told to remove sun glasses, hats (ovecorse) full face helments and any thing that covers the face or hides your appierance and would make a discription not posible, on entry to Banks, post office, shops and any government building.
Why should it be leagal for a woman to do so and not anyone else?

so under the law, an orthodox jewish man could be made to revoe his yarmulke? What about a catholic priest (especially orthodox), or any other number of religions that have some sort of required ehadgear covering?

Not at all Big RR. Full-face coverings are prohibited. The Jewish and Catholic headwear does not cover the face.

I find laws like this are less about security and more a xenophobic response

frankly most of the comments I've read seem more like racism/anti-muslim sentiments
