Gil-Scott Heron dies at 62

Only 62 much younger than I would have guessed.
A tremendous voice with great expressive power, and, winding through a lot of his work was a spark that was part of the spirit of that age, the sense that he was reaching out beyond what was known. A lot of musicians, writers, artists of that era had that same sense of reaching out into a larger and more wonderful universe than the one they were born into. Something was 'out there' to be found in untapped talent, in experience, in insight and all you had to do was struggle towards it.
A great performer on stage. I only saw him once at The Catalyst; I was amazed how tall and imposing his physcial presence was. I had only heard his voice before.
I hadn't heard anything of him in a long time, people say he was on and off using cocaine.
The problem with expressing strength and power convicingly is that when you crash and burn people are pitiless, if you are strong then whatever happens is your own fault. People fall into believing the myth of heroism and forget that we are all of the same body and the same pain.
