Is there a way to humanely punish a cat for wiping her ass up and down the hallway carpet?

Yes, take her to the vet and get her anal glands checked. Poor thing is probably suffering from blocked glands and could use a little relief.

Doubt it every thing seems to be coming out fine for the most part (cleaned her litterbox today) that and the fact that she's an indoor cat keeps her from getting any worms. from time to time she just does weird things with her crap. (aside form playing in her litter box for hours yet somehow completely failing to cover her shit)

Maybe you could put her on your little deck?

Blocked glands don't keep them from doing their normal business, but it causes itchyness and irritation and inflammation. The animal seeks relief by the classic "flop-butt"

She was out there for a bit this morning she had fun dodging the pooled water droplets for a while. (which I made sure she didn't drink from since there still may be stain in them)

She doesn't/hasn't done it regularly if it happens again I'll take her to the vet. Mind you she's due already I just don't like putting her through the trauma. Well that and the vet always makes us feel guilty for not wanting to do open heart surgery on her. (It would probably do more harm than good)

A friend of mine has a rather plump cat who cannot reach her own nether regions with her tongue, gets blocked glands as a result and he has to massage them to expel the pus that accumulates in them. Rather nasty, easier on the cat (and less expensive) than repeated trips to the vet.

I agree with both Guin and Daisy. It is likely going to be worms or blocked glands.

Worms you can treat yourself with an off the shelf worming product, glands may require you to seek veterinary help in the first instance to:
1. confirm the diagnoses; and
2. show you how to unblock the glands.

A third possibility might be that she just had a god-awful itchy arse. It can happen to the best of us.

Not at all in fact she's borderline underweight. And reaching her ass is not an issue as we are treated to watching her clean that particular area almost daily. Made worse by the fact that she stops and stares you down if she catches you looking making you feel guilty. It's not our fault that it has that "train crash" quality about it where it just draws your attention never mind the fact that she decides to do it right in your presence. There are many other rooms and areas in the house just as if not more comfy than the spot where we are. I think she just likes making us uncomfortable.

I think you are anthropomorphizing just a tad if you believe your cat is really playing a game of "nyeh, nyeh, watch me lick my ass" with you because she knows it bothers you. Cats are the most self absorbed creatures in existence, anything they do is always all about them.

Maybe a tad. She stops doing anything when watched.

Then again whenever I'm actually sick she comes up and comforts me while otherwise she's relatively distant.
