Would you adopt a dog that ate its owners?

Post by Scooter »

SASKATOON - The seven dogs who ate the remains of their dead owners in a home in Saskatchewan have all been adopted.

Marv LeNabat of the Saskatoon SPCA says the canines had a behavioural and health assessment and they are confident the dogs will thrive in their new homes.

The dogs belonged to a devoted couple who lived in a rural home near Springside in eastern Saskatchewan.

When the wife died after an illness, her husband then killed himself, leaving the dogs behind to fend for themselves.

RCMP were called to the house July 3 when the owners hadn’t been seen for a couple of weeks.

Brad Pattison, a dog trainer who hosts several TV shows, spent a day earlier this week with the dogs and says they pose no danger to anyone.

Pattison hosts Puppy SOS and is also a trainer on the Slice TV show At the End of My Leash, said the dogs have good dispositions, are compatible with people, and had no trouble being checked out.

He says the dogs did what they had to do to survive.

“You just can’t assume just because they’ve had human flesh, that they’re going to become these creatures of the night, like a werewolf,” says Pattison.

Granted, they didn't attack and kill them, but I'm not sure I'd be entirely comfortable with a dog that would bite into human flesh. Would they do it if someone was passed out drunk or otherwise unconscious, rather than dead?

I would have no problems adopting them.

A living person and a large amount of decaying meat are two different things.
Bah!

That may not be completely true. I have seen a few drunks that more on the side of a large amount of decaying meat that a live person. So that could cause problems.

Don't forget there are many police dogs that have tasted the fresh stuff and aren't rampant killers. These were just hungry and did what dogs are good at, finding dead things to eat

Yea, wasn't that lady who needed a face transplant; chewed up by her own dog, when she was passed out?
That being said I'm glad those pups got good homes; since the owner knew what he was doing and didn't die by accident, he really should have given them over to the shelter in the first place.

The only story I know about a face transplant involves a woman who was mauled by a friend's pet chimp that went ape....

(I guess it wouldn't do any good to say that pun was unintended, would it?)

One thing to bear in mind is that presumably these dogs only did this after they were starving for food; I assume they didn't start chowin' down on Grandma and Grandpa as soon as they keeled over, so I don't think somebody passed out drunk is going to look like lunch to them...

That having been said however, while logically I can't think of a reason for why they couldn't be adopted, (and I'm glad they found good homes for them; I think splitting them up is probably a good idea) psychologically, I personally would not feel comfortable having a dog that had eaten people living in my home. It would just give me the willies....

I wouldn't have a problem adopting one or all of them.

They ate what they had to when they were left without adequate food. Recognizing the man was despondent enough to commit suicide, it's still too bad he didn't think to leave a message with someone to check the dogs, knowing he was leaving them in such a state. I can't begin to think poorly of the dogs.

It's like asking if the families of those crash survivors would feel weird having their relative around knowing s/he ate (dead) human flesh to survive starvation.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

If they waited a decent interval to mourn for their dead masters before feeding, no problem.

I would be very certain to keep the dogs well-fed.

Would I invite the Donnor party for Sunday dinner?

No.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.
