Police in Vancouver, British Columbia, say a human foot inside a running shoe has washed ashore, the latest in roughly a dozen such cases since 2007.
Police say the foot and leg bone were seen late Tuesday afternoon floating along the shore of Vancouver's False Creek.
Police so far have no theories about how the foot ended up in the water.

In the past four years, about a dozen feet encased in shoes have washed up on beaches near Vancouver, along the southern Georgia Strait and off Washington state.
Most of the remains are unidentified, although investigators said at least two of the feet belong to men who were reported missing.
In previous cases, police said it appeared the feet separated from bodies naturally in the water and foul play wasn't suspected.

The motion of the water causes them to unscrew themselves? Time for Team Criminal Minds to solve the caper.

CSI Miami let's me down yet again. They showed they could tell the persons name, age, place of birth, hight, and marriage status from a found foot, I'll never trust them again.....

The flesh rots and they fall off. Ankles (like wrists) are a weak point.
The probable reason they are finding the feet and nothing else is that sea animals have eaten the rest, but weren't able to get at the feet through the shoes.

The reason that they are finding feet, and not other bits, is that athletic shoes are sufficiently buoyant to float with the remains of a foot in them. The tendons and ligaments which hold the feet onto the rest of a body get gnawed away by creatures large and small and up pops the pedal extremity to await the effects of currents, tides, and winds.
If you've been in that area you'll know that there's a lot of water and many opportunities for someone to wind up in it dead by accidental causes.

There was at least one pair that matched as being from the same person. I hadn't heard that all of the rest are only lefts.

Only one pair out of all the feet found have belonged to the same person, and the other feet have been left.
It freaks me out. There is a very sick fucker at work and he is hunting, killing and taunting.

Re-read the article you linked; the opening paragraph says two pairs of feet have been matched, and the summary chart further below shows a number of right feet have been found. As to someone being engaged in "taunting", while its true that foul play cannot be ruled out, it has beed determined that none of the feet were cut off by mechanical means, but rather detached by natural decompostion. So while some of these people may have been killed and dumped in the ocean, this isn't a serial killer who is murdering people and then chopping off their feet.

But that's such a better story.

Wasn't there an episode of Bones on this? Body parts (especially lower limbs) would appear on a beach in LA. Turned out it was from stowaways, who got chopped up in the landing gear they were hiding in, and fell out at takeoff or approach (when the gears moved). Did something similar happen on Long Island, too, or am I mixing fact and fiction.

Even better story if s/he chopped off the feet
first ...

Every once in a while they find a body either still in the wheel well or (more often) in the swamps on the approach to Kennedy Airport that fall out of the landing gear wheel well when the airplane is landing.

With all of the people who die the world over in plane crashes into water and various sinkings of ferries and refuge vessels, I should think there would be lots more sneaker-clad feet washing ashore in various places (on the theory of buoyancy and ankle-rotting).

Actually it said two feet (not pairs were matched. As for the rest? why let truth get in the way of a little fun
