Concrete blocks are being mysteriously painted in bright colours at Coffs Harbour's breakwall - and it's got the locals talking.
The unknown artist started painting the 1.5m-high blocks, which interlock with grey blocks on the breakwall, a couple of months ago.
Marine Rescue Coffs Harbour commander Graeme King - whose office looks straight at the blocks - said yesterday the first was painted yellow and since had "spread like measles".
While in his opinion the coloured blocks looked "ugly" and did not blend with the environment, Mr King said it had certainly created controversy among the town.
"We have to look at it every day and it stands out," Mr King said.
Coffs Harbour art patron Ann Leonard said when she first saw the coloured blocks she thought it was a navigational signal.
But when the other colours began to appear overnight, it had put a smile on her face - especially in the economic climate which was affecting parts of the town.
"It's nice to see someone's cheeky, but it's a colourful way to say wake up to the world," Ms Leonard said.
The town's mayor Keith Rhodes said it was a form of vandalism as it was public infrastructure and could give other graffiti vandals a "clean sheet of paper" to write offensive messages.
But at the same time he said that if the painting was done in the correct way he did not have a problem with it as long as it was at the end of the breakwall.
