Yes insomnia sucks. I go through periods of it the last time went on for 10 years. I would get only 2or 3 hours of sleep in 24. Late night television really sucks.

I maybe got 30 minutes of sleep between 6-7am this morning. I feel like death (luke)warmed over.
My research indicates that my recently developed struggles with insomnia could be a very common side effect of entering peri-menopause, and that this process could last from 3-10 years. I can't imagine how I with survive insomnia for that long, either physically or mentally.
So I am guessing I am about to become dependent on Unisom, because the Ambien my MD prescribed for 15 days to try to get my sleep back on track (it didn't; when I don't take it, I don't sleep - when I do take it, I'm comatose for 8+ hours) isn't going to work long-term.

The best thing to help you sleep in excercise.
In fact my old doctor had a sign in all of his exam rooms, "No matter what your problem is, excercise is part of the solution".

Sure fire way to get some sleep .... cook then eat a nice roast dinner then put a film or program on the TV you really REALLY want to watch and doze off during the opening credits ... happens to me most Sunday afternoons

Slept for 10 hours last night. Got up at 7.00 am, back to bed at 9.00 slept another hour.
Just had to cancell a Thai massage I had booked for today, as I'm feeling to rough to go.

That is an amazingly bad thing, isn't it?
For nearly my whole life I would fall asleep within less than 2 minutes. Guaranteed! And my wife said that I was like toast, when the bell rang I was a awake and ready to go.
But I had a period of severe insomnia about 8 years ago and it really wrecks your day. Weeks. Months!
Nasty business. I'm sympathetic but have no real solution. Limit alcohol, keep regular hours, a little exercise each day is good, but other than that It's just fate, neh?

BSG, if it turns out to be a long term situation you will probably adjust both mentally and physically and find that you can function quite well. You should explore any and all possible causes because even if you are able to function well the toll on the body from prolonged sleep deprivation can be serious.
In my case it is fear of sleeping due to extreme nightmares and flash backs. I have had many attempts at counciling. It helped with the nightmares but not the flashbacks.

I've only just come to experience good sleep quality in the past two years after being diagnosed/treated for severe sleep apnea. So it sucks to now be having issues with a total loss of sleep.
However, I got 7.5 hours last night. Drug-induced, but still I feel great today compared to the total exhaustion of yesterday!
One of my choir buddies told me she has taken a Tylenol PM every night for years in order to sleep well. If I have to take drugs, I will. My liver can take that better than the rest of me could take chronic sleep deprivation.
Miles, you have my sympathies. I do recall you sharing those issues on CSB when Guin was going through sleep issues a couple of years back. I have read that some really positive studies are being done using very short-term MDMA therapy as treatment for PTSD, with terrific results. I wonder if there is a study anywhere near you? It would be great if you could live out your remaining years without those struggles.

Always take drug holidays BSG, never become habituated to using any medication.
It would not be good to be taking meds for a condition which no longer existed.
