This is the moment a shocked bus driver comes to a screeching halt within inches of a semi-naked baby sitting in the centre of a busy road.
It was just after midnight when Mike Hubbard, on his usual bus route, noticed a mysterious shape wriggling on the road up ahead.
At first he thought the ghostly figure might be a dog, but as he approached, the San Antonio driver realised it was a baby wearing just a nappy.
Mr Hubbard stopped just in time to avoid running over the infant.
'I was definitely in shock,' Mr Hubbard told local news station WOAI-TV.
'From a distance I can't tell exactly what it is. It looks like a dog, something moving around, I can't really tell what it was. I started slowing down and then I noticed it's a baby in the middle of the street.'
After slamming on the brakes, Mr Hubbard immediately jumped out of his seat to investigate.
'To me he looked like he was eight months old with a pamper, just sitting there. I couldn't tell if he was eating something or not. But, his eyes got real big when he saw the big old bus in front of him,' Mr Hubbard said.
Then strangely, as the driver checked to see if the baby was alright, the child's father suddenly emerged, scooped up the infant and ran off.
The horrifying moment was captured by a camera on the dashboard of the bus.

In the 80's a very dear friend's daughter got up early, had breakfarst, packed her lunch and dressed for school.
At a little after 6am Jen called her daughter to get up and get ready for school. Then all most the same moment a knock at the door. Jen opens the door to two policemen and her daughter. It turned out Darna age 6 was at the lights to cross the main road to school. when the police saw her.
She happily explaned how she got ready and wanted to be early and didnt want to bother mum. All so was able to give her home adress and phone number but told the police she didn't want to go home because she might be late for school if she did.
It can happen and it could be an accedent. But after litening to the parents she just might be looking for a better home.

I remember once the Hatch escaped my attention for 30 seconds and was able to get out the front screen door. (I didn't think she could reach the handle.)
She climbed down the front stairs and start banging a glass milk bottle on the concrete.
It gave me the fright of my life and that came from just a 30 second distraction.

My younger daughter walked off an elevator in a museum when she was 2 or 3, and I saw her as the door closed. It was an express elevator to the main floor (4 floors below) and I set the land sped record running back up the stairs (probably about 8 floors worth considering the high ceilings th museum had)--she was fine and waiting where she got off--a couple of teenage girls were keeping an eye on her from a distance; me? About half an hour to get my breath back and my heart rate back below 200). It only takes a moment of inattention for the worst to happen.

I know this isn’t the story, but isn’t someone else a tad perplexed by the driver’s testimony?
He admits to seeing something in the road and slowing down for it. He thinks it might be a dog, but when he gets close enough to make it out, he has to slam on the brakes and just stops short by inches.

My guess is that he thought it was a dead dog laying in the road and he planned to run over or straddle it, but those plans changed when he say it was a child. As for "short by inches", it doesn't say how many--could easily have been several hundred inches; but I have no doubt he had to brake suddenly.

I suppose they might mean a mere hundred or two inches, modern journalism being what it is.
However it seems that his thought about it being a dog would have been that it was alive because he said, “'From a distance I can't tell exactly what it is. It looks like a dog, something
moving around, I can't really tell what it was.”
I get the sense that had it been a dog, it would be road grease by now.

Makes for a more dramatic story if it's inches/millimeters.
Oh, and dogs are usually more able and likely to get the fuck out of the way when they realise a bus is bearing down on them.

I think it's against the law to swerve out the way or take other evasive action for a dog (or other animal), if it is likely to cause an accident. Other road users come first, the animal second.
So perhaps it's a bus company policy that the drivers aren't allowed to take evasive action for an animal if doing that might cause discomfort or injury to the passengers on the bus?
So he may have been slowing down a bit hoping to miss the animal, but not planning to take evasive action, until he realised it was a baby. Then he slammed on the brakes because any discomfort or injury to the passengers can be outweighed by the fact that it's a baby, not an animal, on the road.

Oh Bullshit.
If that was Tejas where was that child's firearm? Children in Tejas are not allowed outdoors without the security of a fully-loaded firearm to protect their god-given 2nd amendment rights.

Can you imagine the headline.
"Straying baby takes out rouge bus driver with Glock, saves the day."

Good point alice, but if the driver could see that there was something up ahead, and he thought to slow down, then it becomes a question of why he didn’t brake a bit more so as to know he could make a proper assessment.
God forbid that some passenger be inconvenienced if it was only a dog.

I'm wondering if his usual bus route includes the bar strip?
I've known dads like this; guys who's idea of babysitting is to just tow kids along on their usual haunts.
