Whoo-hoo!

Number 26!

Though I seriously doubt the ranking of Canberra. Possibly it would be 26th if we didn't have a local Government as well as the Federal buggars. But our local lot are doing their best to eff the city. I should know, I am helping them do it. :?

Not bad, I thought Canberra would be further down, as it's not really a "city' city....

A bit Euro-centric, methinks. Although they give the general categories they use to determine "quality" I'd like to see more details on the analysis. There seems to be a some correlation between expensive locales and "quality" which IMHO doesn't actually really get to the underlying issue.

Not subjective my ass. Seriously, how can anything determining the "best" of something compared to something else be anything other than subjective?

I adore Vienna, but there is no way I'd live there, wonderful as it is.

I think there is a BIG problem with these ratings.

What sort of retard ever placed anywhere in South Aus on a list other than closest to the arse hole to the planet?
come on Adelaide??? I give that Melbourn has it quolities as does Sydney even that pimple of a capital hassomething. But Adelade please.

Must of been a misprint in the findings

BBC quiz for you

I'm a big fan of Canberra as a city, as it has so few city like qualities, and is close enough to Sydney should I want anything a proper big city has to offer.

Numbered, but in no particular order, really:

1. Top quality performing arts/cultural institutions
2. Excellent restaurants/food (including quality grocers etc.)
3. Good transportation system
4. Top quality educational institutions
5. Top quality medical care
6. Reasonable cost of housing
7. Easy access to ocean
8. Weather not too extreme; seasonal change, but comfortable outdoors 8 months/yr or more
9. Attractive architecture/environment

I think Sue's nailed it.

I'd only add easy access to open countryside.

That it be at least 60km away from me.

I could live with up to a hundred clicks away, but access to one is nice and handy.

When we come to retire, in about 6-8 yrs from now, we're doing a "gray nomad tour of Aus. One of the things we will be looking for will be a place to settle down in for full retirement.

Our list of criteria is building nicely.

By the sea.
With a good sized block of land.
Close enough to a small town to have access to local shops/pub.
1000 km drive to a reasonable city for monthly shopping trips.
Dog friendly beach.
Not too far from mountains.
Preferably in New Zealand.

1000 clicks drive to a reasonable city?

You are fucking joking.

I am not living up in the Northern Territory or far north Western Australia just for you to get the distances you seek.
