Today at 11:35 marks the 100th birthday of the state I love and call home, New Mexico. This is a unique part of the US with a history older than new england and a true tri-cultural heritage.
A young state with a long history, that was actually part of Spain for ~300 years.
New Mexico's celebrates its 100th birthday Friday with a host of events that kick off a yearlong Centennial party.
An official birthday party will be held from 11 to 1 in the Roundhouse, to be followed by Centennial Ball Friday night at the Santa Fe Convention Center.
Communities around the state are also hosting a variety of activities, from a reenactment of the signing of the proclamation of statehood in Las Cruces to a special one-day only walk across the dam at Elephant Butte Reservoir.
In Albuquerque, The KiMo Theatre launches a year-long New Mexico Statehood Centennial Film Series with a showing of the 1960s movie Easy Rider, which starred Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson and Peter Fonda.
Part of the movie was filmed in New Mexico.
The series will feature films that celebrate New Mexico's history, culture and landscape.

The Land of Enchantment, it's flag is the Sun symbol according to the Pueblo Indians, signifying friendship and unity. From it's ancient origins, to it's current significance in technology and culture; New Mexico, like the sun is always rising.
As a matter of fact, traveling along the desert highway between towns can often be interuppted by aircraft tests, missile tests, and gray alien technology tests, etc. While as a boy, mydad was `60 miles away from the first atomic bomb test, but that didn't affect me none
I spent some good times there visiting my friend Linda when she was well, and then nursing her prior to her death. I like many things about both areas where she lived, Roswell & Albuquerque. There is a stunning NWF outside Roswell that I visited and where I saw lots of wonderful birds. The mountains southwest of Roswell that I drove through on my way to and from Arizona were lovely. Albuquerque is a nice city with great character and the Sandias are lovely, too. I never had time to explore Taos or Santa Fe, but would like to someday.
Likely if I were ever inclined to move south to escape the winters, I would choose New Mexico. The food is terrific; nothing in 'regular' Mexican food (Sonoran or TexMex are what I've had besides it) can begin to touch traditional New Mexican fare.
