Seven members of a US militia have gone on trial accused of plotting to wage war against the US.

It is alleged the Hutaree group planned to kill a police officer then attack the funeral, in an attempt to trigger a revolt against the government.

Members of the Michigan-based militia are accused of sedition, or rebellion, and weapons offences.

But they say they were just exercising their constitutional right to free speech, assembly and to bear arms.

Nine militia members were arrested in March 2010 in southern Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, as a result of an undercover operation involving a group informant.

Law enforcement officers allegedly seized machine guns, unregistered firearms and parts for improvised explosive devices.

According to the indictment, the group planned to target state and federal police officers, referring to them as "foot soldiers" of the government and participants in a "New World Order".

The prosecution is said to have about 100 hours of video and audio recordings of the group allegedly talking about police.

In the tapes, David Stone, 47, the alleged ringleader, is quoted as saying: "I think we got to just start hunting them here pretty soon.

"They're easy to find, they're sitting alongside the road and they got these red and blue lights on top of their car."

A website in the name of the Hutaree group described them as Christian warriors and showed video footage of military-style training exercises.

Assistant US Attorney Christopher Graveline said: "The court will hear testimony and examine evidence concerning this particular group's hatred for, and desire to do physical harm to, law enforcement."

But the accused deny being homegrown extremists and say it was all harmless bluster.

Mr Stone's wife and co-defendant, Tina Mae Stone, told the Associated Press news agency: "It was just a bunch of good old boys out to have fun. We did survival stuff. I did it mostly to spend time with my husband."

The other defendants are David Brian Stone Jr; Joshua Stone of Lenawee County, Michigan; Thomas Piatek of Whiting, Indiana; Kristopher Sickles of Sandusky, Ohio; and Michael Meeks of Manchester, Michigan.

One of the accused, Joshua Clough of Blissfield, Michigan, reached a plea deal and another, Jacob Ward of Huron, Ohio will be tried separately.

All of those arrested were released on bail, despite prosecutors' objections, with the exception of Mr Stone Snr.

The Hutaree claim that an apocalypse is near but has not yet begun and will occur in the future. An article on the Hutaree website suggested that Javier Solana, former Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and of the Western European Union, may be the Antichrist. According to some sources the group is described as practicing survivalism. Most of the members were active voters with unidentified political party affiliation.

Many videos posted on the Hutaree's website support several right-wing organizations, politicians, and news commentators. A former fiancee of Hutaree leader David Stone, has claimed that he was a "Ron Paul fanatic." Several of their site videos include coverage of Paul. Some of their videos claimed that the aims of the United Nations were hostile to American values and philosophy, and include various UN conspiracy theories included unsupported assertions that the UN leadership and the U.S. government were secretly plotting to subvert or destroy their own Charter Documents, namely the U.S. Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Hutaree insignia includes a sword, crossed spears, and the letters "CCR" which stand for "Colonial Christian Republic." Hutaree members use a unique system of paramilitary ranks with titles from highest to lowest: Radok, Boramander, Zulif, Arkon, Rifleman (three grades), Lukore, and Gunner (three grades). University of Pennsylvania linguistics professor Mark Liberman commented: "I don't see basis in biblical or military history for Radok, Boramander, Zulif, Arkon, and Lukore. They sound kind of like Pokémon names (e.g. Arbok, Charmander, Zubat), but there's no precedent there, either." One man who once contemplated joining the group ("Mr. Savino") was refused admission due to his being a Muslim. This same individual later provided information to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) which appears to have assisted them in capturing the last indicted Hutaree at large, Joshua Stone.

The recent federal indictment against the Hutaree members in federal custody centered around the Hutaree's apparent plans to employ extreme violence to replace all (or most) current forms of U.S. government. What appears to have been the primary motivating factor behind their plans was the Hutaree's seemingly consuming resentment of all police and military, the current U.S. government in general, and the United Nations

That would severely depress the firearms industry at a time when the economy is already suffering.

I belonged to the local range until the early 90s when we moved out of the area. When we came back it was closed.

No one expects much of you and you manage to deliver even less!

Most of the charges have been dropped leaving two people with weapons charges.
