Another school shooting

A number of people have been killed and several injured in a shooting at a university in California, police say.

TV footage showed wounded people emerging from buildings at Oikos University in the city of Oakland.

Police and armed response teams have surrounded the buildings, and a suspect has been detained. A nearby hospital said it was treating four victims.

Oikos University is a private religious institution offering courses in theology, music and nursing.

US media are quoting law enforcement sources as saying five people are dead.

Meanwhile, what appeared to be four bodies were seen outside a university building covered with tarpaulin, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Johnna Watson, of Oakland Police, said: "We know this to be a Korean college. A gunman came in to the college and fired multiple shots.

"We do have fatalities, I cannot confirm the number of fatalities we have at this time. We additionally have victims who have suffered from gunshot wounds."

Ms Watson added that medical services as well as police were at the scene.

At least Obama's DEA had Oaksterdam University (marijuana growing) under its boot.
A "Korean college"?
Why not?

eta: Gob, one must recall the DEADLIEST school shooting by a lone gun person was done by a KOREAN at Virginia Tech.

-or-

There are many "Korean Colleges" in the USA, mostly offering degrees in religous studies. This was one of them, although the alleged murderer was a nursing student.

Ok, do these Korean colleges cater to all students? I've not come across that idea before. Seung-Hui Cho,who did the massacre at Virginia Tech was not at a "Korean College".

In the U.S., most institutions of higher learning are Korean, some just moreso than others (espcially the ones with good math and classical music programs).

And less so the ones with good spelling programs.

According to local TV news here in the Bay Area, the shooter is a Korean national, and the school is a Christian school which the shooter used to attend.

The 43-year-old suspect told police he wanted to get back at the school and to inflict pain, Jordan said. There are conflicting reports about whether he was expelled, but the suspect left the school in November and told investigators he wasn't satisfied with the class he was taking. He was also upset with some classmates because he felt he was being teased -- particularly about his English skills -- and treated differently by them. People stopped talking to him and wouldn't even acknowledge him at times, he told investigators.
Very similar to the Virginia Tech. massacre.

A gunman accused of killing seven people at a Christian college was an angry loner who hated women, had been fired from his job and felt overshadowed by his Iraq war veteran brother.

New details about One Goh, 43, a Korean-American nursing student, were disclosed as detectives released the first photograph of him, staring blankly into a camera hours after Monday's mass shooting in Oakland, California.

Romie John Delariman, a college teacher who knew Goh, said he was a keen student but felt paranoid about being an older man in classes where most pupils were young women. Six of those who died in the massacre were women and the only man to die was shot by Goh in a carjacking as he fled from the scene.

Mr Delariman said: "He said he was too old to go to school with all the young people and he said all his classmates were mean to him. He just can't deal with women. I always advised him, 'You go to school to learn, not to make friends'. He can't get along with people. If you say 'How are you?' he'll say 'Why? Don't I look OK? Did I do something to you?"'

The teacher said Goh had also boasted about beating up a mugger in San Francisco and talked about carrying a gun for protection. "I don't know if you could call it mentally unstable but sometimes he would brag that he was capable of hurting people," he added.

Goh had been expelled from Oikos University, a small 100-student religious education establishment, in January for "anger management" issues. He bought a semi-automatic pistol legally the following month.

A loner with known anger issues was able to buy a legal gun? Yep, very similar to the Virginia Tech massacre.

You are very correct, Gob.

After stating the above, might I add that there is no known way that the authorities could have forseen such a turn of events.

Everyone becomes angry now and then by life's often shitty events........99.9999% of us learn to deal with it.

This dude didn't have the coping mechanisms in place to deal with it.

Perhaps what needs to be in place is..........far better access to mental health services in this country.

Would he have utlized such services if available?

I sincrely have my doubts.

Do you not have such things as treatment orders for people at risk of harm to self or harm to others?

Most Americans have a drivers license, that would require a bunch of treatment orders...

We're just all so proud, mighty proud, that his mental illness didn't prevent him from exercising his god-given right to buy a gun in the face of the gun-grabbing Libbruls.

God is proud of him too.

So is Newtie and Rush Limbaugh.

Yes, usually a 48-hour "51-50 hold" is placed on an individual who threatens to harm him/herself or others.

It is at this time that a patient's mental status can be ascertained and whether that person needs further treatment.

In this case, the individual never exhibited any signs of harmful behaviour toward himself or others. He had his issues (as we all do) perhaps they were just enough below the surface as to not alarm anyone.

Similar to our EA's (emergency action.) But as you say, with some people you never know what's going to happen until it happens.

In practice it is very rare for an involuntary hold to be used unless the person has already attacked someone and injured them (like a police officer) or made a very serious attempt at suicide. Anything short of that and they will be given the choice of admitting themselves, which means they can walk out any time they want, or an involuntary hold where they cannot. There is almost no money for mental health so their goal is to kick patients out as soon as possible or not admit them in the first place.

I worked with college students for 10 years, the age group where serious mental illness most often occurs, and then my younger brother (now deceased) developed schizophrenia so I have a lot of experience with the mental health system in Calif.

True.

However, Goh was neither schizophrenic nor exhibited suicide attempts in the past.

He was a very angry middle-aged man who placed blame on others for his failures rather than himself.
