Horse riding is dangerous and riders cannot sue when they fall off, judge rules

A horsewoman badly injured when an Arab gelding threw her has had her compensation hopes dashed after top judges ruled riders must accept the "inherent risks" of their sport.

Nadine Turnbull, 32, may never fully recover after seven-year-old "Gem" bolted across a field and through a hedge before throwing her onto tarmac, London's Appeal Court heard.

She sued Gem's owner, Rebecca Warrener, for substantial damages - but Lord Justice Lewison today told her every equestrian has to live with unexpected danger.

Rejecting her claim, the judge said: "An individual who chooses to ride horses for pleasure no doubt derives enjoyment from being able to control a powerful beast.

"But inherent in that activity is the risk that, on occasions, the horse will not respond to its riders instructions, or will respond in a way that the rider did not intend.

"That is one of the risks inherent in riding horses. That is all that happened in the present case"

If she really wanted to engage in an activity where she could be 100% safe from injury she should have taken up one where there's no danger involved whatsoever....

I'm speaking of course, of rock climbing... :P

What is the secret to horseback riding? Although it seems quite natural to others, I can't seem to protect the family jewels and find it a singularly unpleasant experience.

And horses can be ill-tempered and vindictive.

Not sure why anyone would do this voluntarily.

For once I find myself in total agreement with Dave.

You're both wrong.

(Your balls are too large)

I love to go horse back riding.
And horses can be ill-tempered and vindictive.
If they sense that a "greenhorn" is in the saddle. :nana

I might try a horse. The elephant was decidedly uncomfortable but I did hold on for 10 seconds.

I rode camels in Tunisia and Morocco, now they made horses seem like well stuffed sofas to ride on.

Your experience with horses has been limited to well-worn saddle plugs. Real horses really can be nasty mean creatures. They are one of the few animals that will actually try to kill you and mean it. And even the ones that aren't out to get you can be totally crazy. The most insignificant thing can make them lose their little minds and run off.

"PAPER OMG ITS PAPER, ITS BLOWING, WTF WTF WTF, ITS GOING TO KILL ME! RUN RUN RUN"

Oh Shit its Railroad tracks, Railroad tracks, Railroad tracks, Railroad tracks, They're shiny ! I'm Scared I'm scared I'm scared!"

An old GF had a horse she had owned for a long time and we walked it down to a beach near here. SHe hopped up on his back and ran him down the beach and cleared a 4ft driftwood log bareback with just a bridle on him. Then. Then. We tried to walk him into the tepid little ocean waves washing up on the beach. "FUCK ME, FUCK ME, FUCK ME, THEY'RE TRYING TO KILL ME!" This stupid horse could lift me (about 170lbs at the time) up off the sand with his neck and walk backwards onto dryer land.

I LIKE horses but they really are totally nutz.

They probably felt the same toward you, rube.

My sis used to own a horse ( a shit load of work to be sure) and she became quite an accomplished rider.

I got plenty of saddle time in, although not as much as she did.

If one is unable to master the art of horsemanship (including cleaning up moutains of horse shit) please stay away.

Like I stated previously, a horse can sense a greenhorn and will do everything in its power to get a person like that rattled to the core.

Happy Trails, rube
