Oops!
Aviva Plc, the U.K.’s second- biggest insurer by market value, said the company’s investment unit mistakenly sent an e-mail dismissing its entire staff before retracting the message.
The email, which was sent by the Aviva Investors human resources department to 1,300 employees globally, told recipients to turn over company property as they left the building and reminded them of their obligation to guard the firm’s confidential information, according to Paul Lockstone, spokesman for the unit of the London-based insurer.
“It was intended that this email should have gone to one single person,” Lockstone said by phone. “Unfortunately, as a result of a clerical error, it was sent to all of the Investors staff worldwide.”

No-one should ever be fired by email.
I guess the email from head office wasn't part of the firm's confidential information.

I was fired by a fax once. On my lunch break. Three days after working Christmas. That HAS to be a record of some sort.

Yes, a record for cowardice on the part of management....
(But if he knew you Jarl, perhaps his cowardice was justified...
Maybe he was afraid that if he fired you in person you'd kill him...

I remember about 15 years ago when our provincial government issued a bunch of pink slips the last working day before Christmas. Even worse, they hadn't actually figured out precisely which employees were going to be let go, so they gave notice to about three times as many people as eventually left, leaving people hanging about whether they would have a job come the new year. Merry Fucking Christmas from the Government of Ontario.

I got fired by mail once.
I was working in a one-lawyer law office, and called in sick one day. I came to work the next day and started getting phone calls in response to a newspaper want ad for a receptionist/tyist (same as my job). When the boss rolled in about one in the afternoon, I asked him what was going on. His response? "Didn't you get my letter?" I asked him when he'd mailed it. "Yesterday afternoon."
