Most Popular Names in California

This is probably one of the lamest threads I'll ever start. I don't even think I want to read it...
A list of the most popular names for babies in California from
sfgate.com
This caught my eye because of a reference to the name 'Jason' in another thread. It looks like Jacob is the new Jason (or has been for some time).
Can anybody explain 'Jayden'? I thought that was one of those made up names. Is there some popular story with that character or popular person with that name? (or is it popular for hearing impaired parents that like the sound of the name 'Jason'?)
In regards to the girls names, Sophia is number one and Sofia is number seven.

Jacob. I love that name, but it has been totally ruined by that smeg head Meyer and her friggin glittery bastard vampire and his downtrodden girlfriend arriving to subtly preach Mormonism to the teenagers of the world.

The trend towards sexually ambiguous names for girls seems to have worn off at last. ('Morgan', 'Alex', &c)

So is my mother's, at least phonetically.
Then again, my friend & his wife are Jeremy & Dana. She is Jeremy, he is Dana.

I knew a young couple who named their kid Jayden, at least it was better than 'J-getto'- or'She-quanda'

My favourite travel agent (in Ca) is named Jayden.
And my brother-in-law's parents-in-law are Jean and Francis - or is it Frances and Gene - or .... I just say "Hi - how are you both?"

Andre Agassi and Steffie Graf have a son named Jaden (no y), born in the early 2000s. That's the first time I heard that particular name.

The first parents of a Jayden were trying to come up with a name for their newborn boy...
Mom - "Vhat do ya tink vee should name da boy?"
Dad - "I kinda like da name Jay."
Mom - "Okay, let's name him Jay den."
Dad - "No, I said I like da name Jay!"
Mom - "Dat's good, let's call him Jay den."
Dad - "But honey, I really like da name Jay."
Mom - "Dat's a nice name. So it's Jay den."
Dad - "I gif up! You Vin again. Ve'll name him Jayden."

The erosion of the idea that the adoption of male traits is inherently flattering for women opens up the range of personal expression in much more interesting ways.
In my opinion.
And signals the final stage of maturation of feminism.
Which is good too.

All names are "made up names." The fact that some have been in use longer than others doesn't make them any less "made up." Look at Old Testament names, for example. "Isaac" was made up by Sarah. "Samuel" was made up by Hannah. "Israel" was made up by Jacob (or by an angel with whom he had a tussle). Making up "new" names is as old as the convention of naming.

Some names for whatever reason fall out of favor, and then later make a comeback....
Except for Hortense....Hortense is never coming back....

The list is surprisingly tame. Pity England, where the most common first name by far is Mohammed (and variations of it).
New name in my family as of Friday was Evylene. MS WORD considers it a typo, as do I. But I'm sure we'll all grow to love her and her name.
We have all heard the tale, perhaps apocryphal, of the welfare queen who accepted the name proposed by the hospital staff, "Female." Pronounced Fa-Mall-ee.

Holy crap! With the exception of Sofia-with-an-F and Samantha -- substitute "Ella" and "Lily" from the Aus Top 10 -- that was my daughter's soccer team last season. (My girl and one other have names far from the Top 10.)

To be fair to dgs;
Mohammed was the most popular name for newborn baby boys in England and Wales in 2009, according to official data released on Wednesday.
But 12 different spellings of the name, each listed separately, meant that Oliver officially topped poll.
The name, given to 7,364 children, ended Jack's 14-year reign at number one, with Harry, Alfie and Joshua rounding out the top five in the figures published by the Office for National Statistics.
The two most common spellings of the Muslim name came in at 16th and 36th place, a total of 7,549 baby boys, making it the most popular name overall.
The most common spelling, Mohammed, was the number one name in its own right in the West Midlands region of central England which includes the city of Birmingham, and number four in London.
Olivia, meanwhile, remained the most common girls' name with 5,201 children of that name, followed by Ruby, Chloe, Emily and Sophie.
The highest climber in the girls' top 100 was Maisie, up 29 places to number 34.
Austin showed the largest rise of any name in the top 100 for boys, surging from number 160 in 2008 to 100th place in 2009.
England and Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney's son Kai was one of 1,012 born last year, making it the 68th most popular boys' baby name.
Alfie was the highest climbing new entry to the boys' top 10, up 60 to number four over the past ten years.
More generally, the last 10 years showed a resurgence of popularity among names popular around the start of the 20th century.
In another development, there were 16 newborn Kings in 2009, three King Davids, 68 Princes, eight Dukes, 11 Earls, four Barons and four Lords born.
Amongst the girls, there were 12 Queenies, seven Queens, 109 Princesses and five Ladys.
Florence, the name of Prime Minister David Cameron's new baby, was at number 80 last year.
There were 706,248 live births in England and Wales in 2009.
