Sorry to be literal, but I don't think "happiness" is the appropriate emotion for Memorial Day.

Have a somber and reflective Memorial Day.

Doesn't have much of a ring to it, eh?

I think Dave has a point here...

Though since 9/11 I have definitely seen an uptick in terms of trying to recall the true spirit of Memorial Day, the reality is that we're never going to go back to the time when it was purely a day of Solemn Remembrance for those who sacrificed for our freedoms...

It's still also going to continue to be the unofficial kickoff off for summer in the US, with the pool and amusement park openings, barbecues, and store sales...

And that's okay too...

Well, I found the photo first, then had the idea to use it for the Holiday ...and those soldiers looked happy!

Maybe this pic would have been better?

I'm awaiting November 11

But for all those Yanks who serve, including my son and Brian's Bob, God bless.

My sentiments (and what I said to others that day) exactly.

I think not - see the star? See the P38 Lightning taking off? ETA: that's a pretty well-known plane:

Image

P38J s/n 42-67449; H5-Q (as it reads on the reverse boom); "Miss Mass"; flown by Lt V J Noble of 20th FG, reassigned to 392nd FS, 367th FG.

Personnel of the South Saskatchewan Regiment in captured German ’Schwimmwagen’ - amphibious car of the Wehrmacht. August 11, 1944, Rocquancourt, France.

My bad, it was captured from The Hun.

(Yes, I am familiar with the P-38)

And D-Day is over.

Next?

I may not have been clear. It is "Miss Mass" that is the pretty well known plane - I didn't mean the P38 per se. It wasn't meant as a slam that you didn't recognise the type of plane. (I'm thinking now you may have been making a joke about the kraut?)

It actually took a long time searching the unit designations before I found the artist drawing of "Miss Mass" which I thought was neat - a photo and a drawing of the same plane. Then it turned out that if I'd searched "P38 Schwimmwagen" I would have found all the information in several places at once, including the date and location of the photo!

Sorry if I stepped on toes!
