The Zombie Apocalypse May Actually Be Upon Us




By now we've all seen the awful, awful story about the Florida man who was shot to death by police for refusing to stop chewing on another man's face.

We joked around about it being the canary in the mine shaft of an impending zombie apocalypse. But as Tumblr blogger "I Hope Rick Santorum" helpfully points out in an appropriately viral post, this latest incident is not so much a warning shot as it is another in a disconcertingly intensifying stream of zombie-invoking headlines — all from the past two weeks, and all from the Sunshine State.

It all started on 5/16 with an ominous story about a "mysterious rash" at McArthur High School in Hollywood that launched a HazMat investigation. Twleve students and two teachers were treated and released. The source of the rash remains unknown.

Flashfoward two days: HazMat crews were called in to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to determine the source of an "unknown chemical" that sent five people to the hospital. Theories abound, but an exact cause was not confirmed.

On 5/20, the first real sign of trouble: 41-year-old Dr. Zachary Bird, was arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol near Orlando and charged with felony battery charges for spitting blood in a patrolman's face. He was also "extremely agitated and enraged," and repeatedly banged his head on the patrol car's plexiglass partition "until he bled."

A few days later, another mystery rash was reported at yet another Broward County school. A HazMat team was once again called in to investigate, and once again left without any concrete answers.

The following day, a "disoriented" Canadian man was arrested aboard an American Airlines plane after he inexpicably attempted to rush the cockpit. The plane had just landed in Miami.

On Saturday, an unidentified homeless man had some 80% of his face bitten off by 31-year-old Rudy Eugene.

And here's the bad news: Whatever's happening in Florida appears to be spreading. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign tweeted the following the following warning to its students last night: "Hazardous materials released at Institute for Genomic Biology. Escape area if safe to do so. Otherwise seek shelter."

And in Hackensack, New Jersey, today, a man was rushed to the hospital after he reportedly cut out his own intestines and threw them at police officers.

The "zombie summer" continues overseas

Here we have yet another vicious zombie attack, though this time the “virus” seems to have spread to China. A bus driver was detained after jumping on the hood of a woman’s car and attempting to eat her face when she got out of the car. Bath salts weren’t a factor in this one though – this guy was just drunk.

The “zombie summer” continues, with a growing international reach. It all started on Tuesday afternoon, when a bus driver in China decided to take a “long liquid lunch” according to NY Daily. The man, identified by Chinese media as “Dong”, ran into the road near a bus station at around 2:00 p.m. and jumped in front of a woman’s car, according to Shanghai Daily.

He leaped onto the hood of her car and thrust his fist through her windshield, breaking it. The woman, identified as “Du”, left the vehicle in a hurry, but Dong pounced on her. A that point, he began gnawing on her face. Passersby were unable to remove him from Du, and he continued his cannibalistic act until police eventually arrived and were able to put a stop to him, reports the Complex.

Du will have to undergo plastic surgery to repair damage to her nose and lips, reports io9.

The attacker reportedly drank 1.5 jin (750 grams) of baijiu with his friends at lunch. Instead of passing out, he strangely went nuts. He’s sober now, and “filled with regret”. Sorry or not, he is still detained by police for assault and we’re guessing he probably lost his job too.

Face-Eating Victim Describes Attack

(MIAMI) — The Miami man who had half his face chewed off by a deranged assailant told police that moments before the grisly assault began the man said to him, “You, me, buddy, and nobody else here. I’m going to kill you.”

Rudy Eugene’s assault on Ronald Poppo actually happened on a busy Miami street on May 26 and Eugene had to be shot several times by a police officer to stop the gruesome attack. Eugene was naked and responded to the initial shot by growling at the cop.

Two months after the horrific incident and after several surgeries, Poppo, 65, is now in a long term care facility in the Miami area where he is continuing to recover from his injuries. His doctors say he lost 50 percent of his face, making him almost unrecognizable. His left eye was destroyed. His right eye is still there, but doctors covered it with a flap taken from skin from his forehead and scalp.

In the taped interviews that were conducted on July 19, two Miami homicide detectives asked what assailant Rudy Eugene, who was shot and killed by police during the attack, said to Poppo.

“For a very short amount of time I thought he was a good guy,” Poppo calmly told police in the audio recordings. “But he just went and turned berserk. …He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes…Basically that’s all there is to say about it.”

In the seconds before Eugene began to mutilate him, Poppo recalled that Eugene’s conversation turned ominous.

“You, me, buddy and nobody else here,” Poppo recalled. “I’m going to kill you. Or something like that, I guess.”

“Did he say why?” Detective Sgt. Altarr Williams asked.

“No, he just started to scream,” Poppo said. “And was talking kind of funny talk for a while too… He must have been souped up on something.”

Although Poppo sounded calm through the interview, he recounted very vivid and gruesome moments during the attack.

“He mashed my face into the sidewalk,” he said. “My eyes, my eyes got plucked out. He was strangling me in wrestling holds at the same time he was plucking my eyes out.”

According to CBS Miami in another interview Poppo told detectives that Rudy Eugene blamed him for stealing his Bible although he said he never saw him with a Bible.

Poppo told police he had never met Eugene before the attack and that he did nothing to provoke the attack.

“I just didn’t know how to get away from the guy,” Poppo said.

“I thank the Miami Police Department for saving my life…If they didn’t get there in a nick of time I would’ve definitely be in worse shape. Possibly I’ll be DOA [dead on arrival].”

Eugene was shot and killed by police after they say their repeated pleas to get him to stop attacking Poppo were met with growls. Surveillance video shows that for 18 agonizing minutes Poppo was disrobed from the waist down, kicked, punched and bitten before police shot Eugene four times.

Poppo, who once attended New York City’s elite Stuyvesant High School and dreamed of becoming president, will need months of reconstructive surgery. A foundation set up in his name has raised thousands of dollars.
