Lawyer: Jail conditions may end Mayweather career

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

(06-12) 08:06 PDT LAS VEGAS (AP) --

Lawyers for Floyd Mayweather Jr. say the undefeated champion boxer may never fight again if he's not released from the Las Vegas jail he entered earlier this month.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/LOOdOb) Mayweather's lawyers filed an emergency motion Monday asking that he serve the remainder of his three-month jail sentence in house arrest.

Lawyer Richard Wright says Mayweather's health is deteriorating by being confined to his cell 23 hours a day and restricted from working out. Jailers are keeping him from the general inmate population because of his celebrity status.

The motion says the boxer's doctor believes the conditions could do irreversible damage to Mayweather's physique.

Jail officials weren't immediately available for comment.

Mayweather was booked June 1 for attacking his ex-girlfriend while two of their children watched.

His cell is big enough to do pushups, isn't it? Running in place? Jumping jacks?

It's not like he has anything else to do 23 hours a day.

I suspect reading The Rise And Fall Of The Roman Empire, The Brothers Karamazov, and The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare won't be filling up the lion's share of his time....

A prizefighter who physically assaults the mother of his children in front of them deserves no special consideration.

Give him a set of dumbbells - he can stay fit enough doing pushups, squats, etc. and he gets an hour a day to walk/run.

Suck it up, wife beater.

If he wants to be in GP, I say let him...that would be the OPPOSITE of special consideration.

I'm not sure I agree with that Jarl...

If he were doing time for child molesting, yes, but the Heavy Weight Champ, with all his bucks doing time for smacking around his old lady, (a crime I'm sure many of his room mates would have no problem with) would probably get A List celebrity treatment from most of the other inmates...

If they're in county lock up, they're all short timers, and they'd probably be impressed with him and also think he might reward them in some way. They'd probably bend over backwards, (or forwards if he preferred) to curry favor with him.

Perhaps some, the majority would want to beat his @ss for creds.

He's not asking for GP, he's asking for house arrest at his no doubt cushy personal digs.

I bet anything he didn't get 90 days on a first offense, either.

I know I'm going out on a limb here, but...

Is it just POSSIBLE that his criminal-defense attorney is making a totally fucking preposterous claim, hoping that the judge is either catatonically stupid or a prizefighting fan, and will cut his client some slack?

Jimmy, I don't follow all the various weight classifications where Mayweather has plied his trade, but I don't think he has ever been heavyweight champ.

The highest weight class he has ever fought in was junior (light) middleweight, aka super-welterweight. He is a little guy...5'8" and ~150lbs. (S-W tops out at 154lbs.)
