#@#&^ing Windoze 7!!

This morning, for no particular reason, I ran the diagnostic program on my laptop. There was a message that said I should remove one file because it could be dangerous. So I did.
Now I can't start up the damn computer. When it gets to the place where I enter my password to log in the screen is frozen. The cursor won't move. Nothing moves.
So I started up from the Windows 7 disc and tried a system restore about 6 times trying different restore points. Each time it ended with a message that said it didn't work. One of the choices when starting up from the disc is to test the memory, so I did and it said it is okay.
Prior to this I had no problems or even a hint of problems. It seems that by checking for problems when I didn't have a problem I caused a problem.
Is there a repair disc of some sort I can buy or should I take the laptop outside and shoot it?
If there is a program I can buy that might fix it, what is it?
I do have a few things I'd prefer not to lose.
Shit.
