HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KTLA) -- Comedian and actor Fred Willard is denying any wrongdoing after he was arrested at an adult theater in Hollywood for lewd conduct.

Willard, 72, was arrested around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Tiki Theater, an adult movie theater located on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood.

He was released from police custody a short time later.

Los Angeles police say that vice officers on a routine inspection caught Willard in a lewd act -- reportedly with his pants down -- inside the theater.

Instructions are clearly posted all over the theater, prohibiting sexual activity and barring patrons from unzipping their pants.

On Thursday, Willard told a cameraperson that that it was all a big misunderstanding and that, "It didn't happen."

Willard's attorney, Paul Takakjian, said in a statement: "With all due respect to the individual officer, our belief [is] that Fred did nothing in any violation of any law. We will be working vigorously to clear his name in this matter."

Willard has been working steadily in Hollywood for the past several decades.

He has appeared in countless sitcoms, including "Modern Family" and "Raising Hope."

He is perhaps best known for his roles in Christopher Guest films including "Best in Show," "For Your Consideration," and "Waiting for Guffman."

Willard recently appeared on the KTLA Morning News to promote his new ABC sketch comedy show, "Trust Us With Your Life."

So the police only thought he had his pants down, and they really weren't? Was he wearing flesh coloured pants, with a print resembling human hair, such that they could have been mistaken about what they saw?

Never ceases to amaze me how people try to deny these things when so obviously caught in the act. Larry Craig's "wide stance" defence comes to mind.

Somehow 'nude' stretchy pants on an African-American woman just don't work as 'well'.

It's amazing to me that these places are even able to stay in business, given how easy it is get whatever porn you want brought into the privacy of your home....

For an easily recognizable Hollywood figure to go out to a place like this rather than just watch porn at home means there's got to be something at work here besides just the desire to see porn....

I've always liked Fred Willard, (going back to his days on the hysterical Fernwood Tonight) but Fred's obviously got some kind of an issue....

It must be the thrill of running the risk of getting caught that must somehow play into this for him; or the gritty sleaziness of the experience....

I also have to say that it seems to me that the vice squad ought to have better things to do with its time than performing zipper checks in dirty movie theaters....

Of all people the cops should/could be chasing, gay guys with their cocks out in porno theaters ranks with apple scrumpers in my books.

I have no idea what apple scrimpers are, but I agree that this should be a low priority for law enforcement. My guess is that the police have to make an arrest or two at these places every so often to keep the local community happy. I bet they get tons of complaints about the place, as so many people don't want them in their neighborhoods. We have a whole series of cases we're involved in relating to the zoning and siting of adult establishments -- its not an issue people are able to deal with in a rational matter.

I don't know that Willard is gay, (I think he's been married for something like 40 years) or that this was necessarily a gay porno theater.

Then there's no excus4e for it! Prosecute to the max!!!
