Toy Story Three

Post by liberty »

Toy Story Three; this is silly but poignant to an idealistic and sentimental type like myself. I took my son to see the movie. It is an outstand movie. My son was so happy; I can ’t really convey it without gong into a lot of details; he communicates a lot with body language and facial expression. Needless to say he was fascinated by the movie.

I find myself thinking about the movie myself. Two questions keep coming up in my thoughts: Why is Sherriff Woody, the cowboy doll, so important to Andy and where is Andy’s father. I think the answer is self evident: Andy’s father is dead and he gave Woody to Andy just before he died. Andy’s father was the county sheriff and was killed in the line of duty. Andy would miss his dad when he was at work. So Andy’s father gave him the sheriff doll to play with when he is away. Andy’s father said, “ This is Sheriff Woody he was my pall when I was a little boy; he will take care of you when I am not around” Andy noticed and said‘” Look dad he has a badge just like you“. A short time later Andy’s father died and Woody became Andy’s pall and that is how a toy could be so important to an eighteen years old man.

No, not particularly, but it is ok. I just don’t see the correlation between a heart warming story of a boy, love and loyalty and the story of a psychopathic killing ventriloquist dummy.

You if you will notice I posted this string twice. I first posted it here in the wrong forum and then I move it to arts. I thought I had deleted this one.

He wasn't a ventriloquist dummy he was a doll. A take off at the time of the popular "My Buddy" doll.

Oddly Chucky's popularity lasted much longer.

Well, there are other animated kiddie movies I like better, (Ratatouille, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua come to mind) but the Toy Story series is okay with me...we have the first two on DVD, and we're going to see TS3 this weekend...

Well that's because you're so far away from having small kids around that you've become a cranky old geezer... :P

Toy Story is one of my all-time favorites.

Toy Story 3 is a real tear-jerker, LJ - be ready for it! ;)

Maybe you have to have Chihuahuas (we have three) to appreciate how much fun that film is...

PIXAR consistently does awesome stuff, can't wait to see TS3.

They pioneered feature film CGI with TS1, creatively using characters that didn't need to look life-like. That was was the initial problem with computer animation, it was smooth and perfect ...and totally unnatural looking. If you notice in TS1, the few attempts at computer generating a human being look kinda clunky. (If you ask me, Dreamworks (Shrek) is the best at that.) So, PIXAR went for characterization of the inanimate, rather than focusing on the organic early on; their signature desk lamp 'Luxo, Jr.' exemplifies this;

Personally, I'd rather watch drawn animation, but it seems drawn films are few and far between (although I think Disney had one fairly recently). However, my kids have loved most of the Pixar style animation, and even i enjoyed Tim Burton's recent Alice in Wonderland.

I bought a classic cartoons compilation for my beau's kids this weekend - spent a couple of hours watching old Popeye cartoons yesterday. It's wild to think how far the genre has come.

Drawn animation started going to hell in the early 1960's for economic reasons...

Good drawn animation relies on a large number of individual frames per second being hand drawn...(preferably by talented artists...Like those employed in the Golden Age of hand drawn animation by Disney, Warner Brothers, and Max Fleischer )

As it became increasingly expensive to pay for this, fewer and fewer frames were drawn to create each animated scene, reducing the sense of realism....

The period from the early 60's to about the mid eighties, (when computer generated animation really began to develop technologically) really marks the Dark Ages artistically for the genre...

The "good" cartoons that were created in that period, (like Rocky and Bullwinkle and some of the Hanna Barberra cartoons) were "good", because the writing was hip and clever for the time....If you judged them just on the animation quality, (compared to say a 1930's era Betty Boop cartoon) they were pretty awful.
