I wonder... Did our ex-resident subordinate of Tim Geithner have a hand in this?

Or maybe his Polish cousin?

Detroit-made amphibious vehicle switches from land to sea with a button press

DETROIT, MI - The first commercially sold amphibious all-terrain vehicle is being produced right here in the Detroit area, and now, after investing $200 million and 2 million man hours, Gibbs Sports Amphibians would like to make some money back, company founder Alan Gibbs said today at an event highlighting the release of the Quadski.

The Quadski is being produced at the company's 54,000-square-foot assembly plant in Auburn Hills. The company currently has 100 employees in Michigan, and expects to add another 200 workers as it ramps up production of the Quadski in the next 12 months.

The Quadski will hit retail shelves in November, and Gibbs said the company hopes to sell at least 1,000 units in its first year of sales. The vehicle will retail for $40,000.

The ATV has a 175-horsepower BMW engine, which brings it to speeds of 45 miles per hour on both land and water. The Quadski converts from a land-based to a water-borne craft with the push of a button, and the process takes about five seconds.

This is not the first attempt to crack the commercial market for Gibbs, which has developed amphibious vehicles for the military. The New York Times reports that its three-seat amphibious car, the Aquada, was launched to much fanfare in 2003 but the program was shelved a year later.

It looks like it would be fun, but $40,000?

They are dreaming.

I agree.
Needs to be under $15k for the sporting public to buy into it.
One can buy a really good quad and a jet ski and trailer to tow behind the quad for under $15K.
