If You Could Go Back To Any Time In History...

Where would you go ?

I have friends who say they would like to go back to the time signing of The Declaration Of Independence, or the time of the writing of The Constitution...(to see just what those fellows had in mind....)

That would be interesting, but if I only got one shot at this, I think there's only one answer....

To go back to the time of The Resurrection...

To see for a fact that it really happened...

And then to come back to The Present and tell all my Atheist friends...

I've been there, I've seen it; it really happened...so...

Neener neener you're all going to roast in Hell... :nana

LJ. THAT WOULD BE MY PICK, ALSO

Most likely though, after wasting a perfectly good Easter weekend, sitting in Golgotha for hours for some kind of awe inspiring revelation, I would have to return to tell all my religious friends that they have been proselytizing their asses off for no good reason.

So to paraphrase, "I've been there, I saw absolutely nothing; it really never happened...so...
Neener neener you're all going to die and merely return to your biblical dust." Lights out... game over... don't take a bag. Of course, they will then tell me I obviously booked my trip for the wrong weekend using the Gregorian instead of the Julian calendar. A typical time-travel blunder.

To the moment the universe was created by either divine or less divine means. Of course I would have to wear some protection in case it really was a Big Bang.

I've been reading the "Outlander" series by Diana Gabaldon, where several of the major characters time travel between the modern world and 18th century Scotland and the Colonies. I have to say, the characters do a pretty good job of "handling" the conveniences of that world and time (yes, I know its fiction) --- I'm not sure I would be so willing to give up my king-sized tempurpedic, or the quick comfortable travel, or the central heating and hot water, or vaccines and modern medicine. Besides, that's one reason I moved to Boston, which hasn't really changed *that* much since the Revolution ;-)

Paris, 1920s. Getting myself invited to the soirees in Gertrude Stein's salon and meeting all the literary and artistic geniuses of the period - Hemingway, Fitzgerald, James Joyce, Sinclair Lewis, Picasso, Braque, Matisse, etc., etc.

I thought about some periods earlier in history, but I draw the line at the necessity of living only in times after the invention of the flush toilet.

That's a pretty good choice...

Are we talking about only as an observer, or would there be a chance of changing things by my presence? If the latter, I wouldn't want to go.

A valid question...

Observer status only...

No interference with the time line...

I'd go back to the turn of the last century and spend with the original suffragettes, attend the Seneca Falls convention, and learn from the originals.

Or I'd go back to hang out with John and Abigail Adams, at pretty much any point during their lifetimes.

Dales, ick!

I think I'd like to see Lee's surrender and the discussions he had leading up to it. Or the USSC deliberations leading up to the appointment of W as president.

Which raises another question...

What if I actually did what I suggested in the OP?

It would be a complete Twilight Zone episode....

If a person did in fact go back to the time of The Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ, and witness those events, and then return to the present...

They'd be treated like they were nuts...

Nobody would believe them...

I certainly wouldn't ; I'd figure this was some bipolar loony tune who was at least one taco short of a combination platter...(We have a lot of examples of this in The City That Used To Know How...)

But what if he wasn't crazy....

What if he was telling the truth?

Hmmm... mine is quite banal I'm afraid, I'd love to spend time in the London and Dartmoor of the Holmes days, (say 1881 to 1904), soaking up the atmosphere, and living the life of the London gent. A meeting with ACD would be the icing on the cake.

Ahh, to be young, British and wealthy in the late 1800's...At the peak of the Victorian Era...

What a time that would have been... :ok

This is not an answer to Lord Jim's question, but I would like to go back and fetch Thomas Jefferson from his deathbed (so that nothing he saw could change anything) and bring him here.

I would like to show him (in a temporarily reinvigorated body so that he could take the tour) what we have made of the nation he was so instrumental in creating. And beyond what has become of the nation, what has become of the world. Not just the revolutionary, the political visionary in Jefferson, but also the scholar of almost every science available to him.

I cannot think of anyone better suited to grasp both the stunning achievements and the disappointing failures of our nation and our world and our species.

Give me a buzz, Tom. I'd love to show you around.
