Clever Homeless Man

Notice where the homeless dude was sitting....

Story behind photo of NYC cop helping homeless man

PHOENIX -- Jennifer Foster was a tourist from Arizona walking around Times Square when her eyes fixed on a man, apparently homeless. He was sitting on the sidewalk asking for change, his bare feet exposed to the 40-degree night.

Next, she saw a New York City police officer, bent down on a knee, giving him a brand-new pair of winter boots and some thermal socks. Foster used her cell phone to snap a photo of the act.

The picture would rocket through social media websites and appear in national media coverage this week, giving Foster and the officer a bit of fame. And Foster and the officer were scheduled to appear on NBC's "Today" show Friday morning.

Foster told the New York Times she did not take the picture intending to share it.

Instead, she said she snapped the photo because it brought back a childhood memory of her own father, a Phoenix police officer.

The photo was taken Nov. 14 -- ages ago, in an era of instant online posting. But Foster did not Instagram or Tweet or Facebook the picture. Indeed, she told the Times, she does not use Facebook.

She waited until she returned to Arizona, back to her job leading the communications and dispatch department of the Pinal County Sheriff's Office. Then, according to the Times, she sent the department an e-mail, a bit the way one would send a complimentary-comment card.

Someone at the NYPD asked her if she could send the photo and if the department could use it on its own Facebook site. Foster agreed.

The photo shows the officer crouched on his left knee, his head lowered under his uniform cap. The newly purchased boots with the insulated collars rest between him and the shoeless man.

The photo was posted on the NYPD's Facebook site Tuesday, along with a description of the scene provided to the department by Foster.

"I have been in law enforcement for 17 years," Foster wrote. "I was never so impressed in my life."

She said she overheard the officer tell the man that he had boots for him. "Let's put them on and take care of you," she quoted him as saying.

"The reminder this officer gave to our profession in his presentation of human kindness has not been lost on myself or any of the Arizona law-enforcement officials with whom this story has been shared," she wrote.

On Facebook, the photo took off.

Neither she nor the NYPD knew the identity of the officer when the photo was posted. A follow-up post by the department completed the story.

Officer Larry DePrimo, 25, was identified hours later. The Times said he lives with his parents on Long Island.

By Thursday afternoon, the post had received more than 400,000 "likes."

Comments posted there praised the officer. A woman from Winston-Salem, N.C., wrote: "You may not get a medal for your kindness, but I guarantee you that man will never forget you, and neither will anyone else who sees this pic!"

Some also praised Foster for her quick thinking. A woman from Ontario said, "I am so glad that someone took pics of a good cop."

Foster did not return e-mails seeking comment Thursday. A spokesman for the Pinal County Sheriff's Office said she was flying to New York.

Foster, who appeared on "NBC Nightly News" Thursday. told the Times the image reminded her of a childhood memory of her father crouching down to give food to a homeless man.

Of DePrimo, she said, "The fact that he cared enough to stop his shift, his day, spend his time and now I know his own money, to do this thing for this gentleman who had nothing -- I can't say enough about it."

Foster's father, Steve Park, died of a heart attack in 2006, a Phoenix police spokesman said.

DePrimo, the NYPD officer who is assigned to the Sixth Precinct, told Newsday that the man "smiled from ear to ear" after getting the boots. "It was like you gave him a million dollars," he said.

He told the New York Times that he keeps the receipt for the boots in his vest to remind him "that sometimes people have it worse."

I'm glad to see that the back story wasn't that it was a set up....

It was a lovely act of humanity and kindness, but I'm a bit troubled by the idea that acts of humanity and kindness are becoming noteworthy, rather than commonplace....

I can't help but picture the "homeless" man at home with a collection of boots.

Either that or he sells them so he can use the money for something else.

Being in front of a shoe store with no shoes on is much too convenient. I'm surprised nobody else has commented on that fact.

But the cop is a good man even if he was scammed.

Joe, (unless you're being sardonic, as you frequently are... 8-) ) you're being a little too cynical, even for me....

Look at the guy's pants...

Look at the raw look on his feet...

Look at his whole unkempt, AquaLung persona....(the beard, the hair, the backpack that says, "I've got the proof that 9-11 was an inside job, right here; the CIA's after me...")

That's an awful lot of trouble to go to just score a pair of boots...

I didn't mean to imply that the homeless man persona was a disguise. I think he intentionally sat in front of a shoe store because he was hoping someone would give him money because they would see that he had no shoes.

He was using subliminal advertising. :D

With his big feet hanging out there in front of a shoe store he didn't need a sign to tell people that he had no shoes.

The other thing I thought about is that his "raw" feet might not be too comfortable with boots on and could get infected if the feet weren't treated first.

While I don't know much about acts of kindness showered upon homeless people in NYC, I can attest to plenty of acts of kindness that have gone unreported towards the victims of Sandy (I refuse to call it superstorm Sandy as the media has dubbed it as I am sure something bigger will come). I was down in Mastic Beach this past weekend helping clean up a house or two. My contribution was next to nothing compared to many of the volly's who have been there since the day after the storm. Many people want to help, but if you check with the Red Cross and other agencies, all they want is monetary help. Some cannot afford to help that way, but do have a day or two where they can help get moldy sheetrock out, or get the soggy furniture out.

Me, I got connected from a buddy of mine who's Lutheran church is involved with getting "people" to the sites. Free labor allows the homeowner to pay for the repairs rather than the demolishing that is needed right now.

Gee Strop, Ian looks like maybe he did a couple lines before coming out on stage there....(Christ, he looks like he sucked up an eight ball before he hit the stage...he looks like he's doing an impersonation of Marty Feldman....disturbing...)

Of course it was 1977....

Ian wasn't the only one to embarrass himself that year.... :?

Crackpot, it's only sad if you aren't happy.

If, like the old blind dog, you live in the moment and don't mourn the past losses, you can also join Larry at an equivalent level of joy!
Bah!

I'm sorry, were you saying something?

Is this the line for the bus to Reno?....

I've got my Hawaiian shirt, sandals, white socks, and Bermuda shorts; I'm already to go....

I understand they've got a great buffet at the hotel....

Right next to the nickle slots.....

It's shame you don't live in America. Any thoughtful New York cop would have bought you a whore for the night.

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Ian A, a lot of wild flailing and dramatic mugging neither connected rhythmically or thematically to the music. Both of which manage to detract from a pretty solidly constructed pop song.

It can't be insecurity which makes him want to 'oversell' the music either. This record came out years and concert tours before 1977.
