The Taxes are Done and off to the Tax Guy for Filing.

I just wanted to gloat about it.

Usually they are done the first week or two of February so we get the refund in time to pay property tax with it in April. This year, no tax refund. We'll owe. Still, I love crossing this chore off the list each year.

I've always wondered why clocks that use Roman Numerals never use the correct #4...

You have said in the past that either you should have to pay more taxes or have no problem paying more in taxes. I think you should send in double (maybe triple) the amount you owe. All those able should do their part....right????

Getting a refund every year may seem nice, but it's not very good practice. Money left on the table, and so on.

I HATE preparing my tax returns because I am in the unfortunate position of making a few thousand dollars a year for "consulting" work, and in addition to having to pay a few thousand extra with my return, Turbo Tax insists on calling me "self-employed" and trying to force me to fill out quarterly returns and such (I just throw away the forms when I can't keep the program from printing them out).

I also force myself to total up all the taxes I pay to the Feds, state, county, municipality, school district, which reminds me why I care about "government." I must admit it also makes me a tiny bit resentful of those who manage to avoid or evade payment of taxes, though they are as able as I am to do so -self employed people I know, and so on.

Contrary to the silly rhetoric that abounds in some circles, I do not resent paying taxes, but I do resent paying the portion of my taxes that pay for things that Government has no business being involved in.

Back when the earliest clocks were installed in church towers, church officials wanted to avoid using the first two letters of the name of the pagan Roman god IVPITER (original Latin spelling...you know, like "IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM") in such a sacred setting.

Getting mine done Wednesday. Hoping for a modest return or at least not paying out the ass like we did last year

I only worked about 7 months total last year and did not collect UI and paid into COBRA so I am expecting some money back. We'll see.

COBRA?????

Ours is done July to July, we've had a great deal of work done on our house in Cornwall, so our overseas "income" should be negligable or in arears. I'm hoping for a heafty payout this year.

Just before we go back to the UK as well. :)

COBRA (I forget what it stands for) but basically it is health insurance from your previous company only difference is you pay 100% (no company help) of the cost (mine was $1600 a month for me, my wife and daughter). It allows those who quit were layed off or fired to maintain health coverage for 18 months after leaving under their old companies policy. I don't think it is a national program, but it is a law in NY state that the company has to offer former employees.
