Calif. man condemned for killing woman, 87, dies

SAN QUENTIN STATE PRISON, Calif. (AP) — A 55-year-old inmate who spent more than 20 years on California's death row for the rape and murder of an 87-year-old woman has died.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement Monday that Mario Lewis Gray died at San Quentin State Prison, where he was being held without a cellmate.
Gray had been on death row since March 1990, when he was sentenced to death in Los Angeles County for the 1987 burglary, rape and murder of an 87-year-old woman in her home in El Monte.
Officials say Gray was found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead Saturday morning. They say a cause of death will not be released until the results of an autopsy.
