Congratulations!

Has Antioch considered becoming Oakland's 'Sister City'?

Does the definition of "robbery" include muggings and purse-snatchings? These could be included, as they usually conform to the common law definition of theft by force or threat of force.

My father was mugged twice in the same place over a six month period. Same result. Out $20. Statistically, he was very special, I suppose.

Yes, dgs same stats.

And Joe, Antioch may only be Number 2 but we'll push harder.

I have the two arms I was born with, thankfully; but by all means arm yourself if you lack one or both.

Well, a great deal depends on what part of a city one lives in. Virtually all US cities have relatively high-crime and relatively low-crime areas.

In some cities, those areas are intermingled; but in other cities, their boundaries are quite clear. For one striking example, in Washington DC, the crime rate in the northwest is far lower than that in the south and east. Similarly, in Oakland, the hills in the east have a far smaller crime problem than do the flatlands in the west.

In the "dump" which I share with dales, crime is overwhelmingly concentrated in the northwest corner of the city. (That area also has the worst public schools.)

I did a little digging in local crime statistics, and I found that my southwest Antioch neck of the woods -- roughly one eighth of the city -- accounts for very little of the crime in Antioch. Specifically, during the twenty-seven months from January of 2011 through March of 2013, my part of Antioch accounted for barely one twentieth (5.16%) of Antioch's most serious crimes:

0.00% of Antioch's homicides,
5.56% of Antioch's rapes,
8.92% of Antioch's robberies, and
3.02% of Antioch's aggravated assaults.

All in all (and not just in terms of crime), my part of Antioch is a pretty good place to live.

Well, Andrew on the whole I agree with you.

However anecdotal evidence would suggest otherwise.

Within a month or moving to Antioch, my car was broken into and my stereo system was stolen. I have yet to replace the system as I don't want to offer the f'n basturds another shot. Also taken were other valuables of a personal nature (photos, books and notes) that have ZERO monetary valure. The f'kers also stole a warm jacket.

In January of this year my car was stolen out of my parking space where I live. This caused my no end of hassle which I don't wish to go into here. Needless to say I am still dealing from the reprucussions of that as I have NO comperehesive coverage.

Needless to say, if I had the money I would leave this dump in a New York minute and never look back.

You live in a better part of town than I do Andrew, but why you chose Anitoch (instead of Brentwood [the city next door], which is far better) is beyond me. :shrug

If had the cabbage I'd move back to San Ramon. :ok

Of course we only hear about the bad part of Oakland and that's understandable since everyone is shooting each other over there.

I went to a party once in the Oakland hills and the home was four stories high. Butlers were walking around holding trays filled with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

At first I wondered if I had to pay for everything they served because I hadn't brought any cash. Once I figured out everything was free I eventually got drunk and asked for a doggie bag before I left.

Peedmont and Montclair are very desireable places to live. Butlers serve horseovaries and people pee chablis. The flats around E.14th (aka: International Blvd) are another story.

Oakland has had a dysfunctional govt and understaffed police dept for far too long. The mayoress walks around like she's in a fog. In fact this last week they've gone thru three police chiefs. The woman is a clueless boob!

Jarl: I hope your sis lives in the hills.

Has your sis hired out private security forces to keep her safe from the flatlands riff-raff?

Oakland PD is notoriously understaffed/underfunded (like Antioch) and anything other than a homicide will not be given any time or scarce resources.

Many neighborhood in Peedmont and Montclair have resorted to hiring private security firms to patrol and arrest various sh-theads for B&E.
