That doesn't entitle you to a Kindle version, or any other electronic copy, any more than it allows you to photocopy the entire book and pass it out to your friends. You bought one hard copy, period. Anything else is theft.

There are plenty of free Kindle books, and low-priced ones as well, from a variety of legitimate sources.

Death also doesn't matter - intellectual property rights are inheritable. Still stealing.

No it doesn't entitle me Guin, but I think of it in the same way as the right that allows me to create a backup copy of a CD on another format and as long as the prices for kindle books remain so high I will continue to do so.

BTW, it's nice to find someone who has never so much as recorded a song from the radio or a movie from TV... ;)

I have no DVR, and I don't do pirated anything, including software. I don't recall ever copying a song off of the radio, either.

And yes, there is a difference between making a backup copy and taking a proprietary formatted document, hacking into it, and distributing it, all without paying to use those rights.

You never owned/used a VHS recorder?

Your last paragraph makes me sound like someone who does this on a large scale for profit! I can assure you that I have never hacked anything... I wouldn't know where to start!

Oh and I do believe that not being able to recall whether or not you ever recorded a song from the radio is a bit of a cop out. I would have thought that someone who was so vehemently against piracy would know for a fact that she had never committed such a heinous crime.

I was actually being accurate -- I've never copied songs off the radio as an adult (say, 18+), but maybe I did it was a younger kid. I don't have any specific memory of doing so, and I ditched my old cassette tapes decades ago, although I don't think I would have. Nice try at diversion though, by making totally baseless accusations.

As for dabbling in politics, I don't dabble, I'm an elected official. Ever get up the gumption, and do the work, to get your name on a ballot?

Read it again Guin... I didn't accuse you of anything. I remember filling cassettes from the radio as a kid. I just find it implausible that somebody wouldn't remember whether they did so or not. Maybe it's just me... Is there anyone else who can't remember whether they did this or not?

Oh, and I'm going to assume that your last paragraph was aimed at CP...

Bloody shame you cannot "rip" books you own, as you can with CDs and DVds. I have several rare/obscure/collectors books which are just never going to get on Kindle.

As. For holding elected office I have yet to reach the point where my revulsion of state and local policies has yet to surpass my revulsion of either of the state parties

Terms of Use for your Kindle/Kindle Store from the Amazon web site:
1. Kindle Content

Use of Kindle Content. Upon your download of Kindle Content and payment of any applicable fees (including applicable taxes), the Content Provider grants you a non-exclusive right to view, use, and display such Kindle Content an unlimited number of times, solely on the Kindle or a Reading Application or as otherwise permitted as part of the Service, solely on the number of Kindles or Supported Devices specified in the Kindle Store, and solely for your personal, non-commercial use. Kindle Content is licensed, not sold, to you by the Content Provider. The Content Provider may include additional terms for use within its Kindle Content. Those terms will also apply, but this Agreement will govern in the event of a conflict. Some Kindle Content, such as Periodicals, may not be available to you through Reading Applications.

Limitations. Unless specifically indicated otherwise, you may not sell, rent, lease, distribute, broadcast, sublicense, or otherwise assign any rights to the Kindle Content or any portion of it to any third party, and you may not remove or modify any proprietary notices or labels on the Kindle Content. In addition, you may not bypass, modify, defeat, or circumvent security features that protect the Kindle Content.

A class-action against Apple and e-book publishers was settled in the US this fall. Supposedly, prices are supposed to come down a bit, and price fixing is supposed to end, plus some "damages" are supposed to be paid to purchasers. Amazon sends a daily email with the Kindle "daily deal" which is two - four or sometimes more books in the $2-$3 dollar range. They have 20 or 30 books every month under $3.99, and there are other groups that find legitimate free or low costs books and share the information - Lendle is one, Kindle Nation Daily is another.
