A Rave For Another BBC America Series..."Copper"....

Post by Lord Jim »

After I told a friend of mine how much I enjoyed Ripper Street, she asked me if I had seen Copper....

I said I had seen the promos for it, but I hadn't checked it out...she suggested that I do so...

It's had a full season run, so we have the full season on Comcast Xfinity....

We checked it out last night expecting to watch one episode, and got pulled in to it to the point that we wound up watching three...

The first thing that should be said about Copper is that it's not "good wholesome entertainment for the whole family"...

(One of the primary story arcs involves a young girl who was married off at 10, and then runs away to become a prostitute, helps to kill her tormentors, and then develops a crush on the guy who saved her from this....the young actress who played the role plays it very well; I suspect she's going to have a successful career in Hollywood...)

But like Ripper Street, it's really well crafted...Like Ripper Street, the cinematographic realism is so well done you can practically smell the horse dung and other unfortunate cacophony of aromas rising from the gritty streets...

It tells a morally mixed story...

It's set in New York, right after the Draft Riots of 1863; it follows the exploits of a "copper" (a mustered out Union war hero of Irish extraction) working as a detective in New York's notorious "5 Points" District...

Back in the good old days, when even "the good guys" were whoring and drinking, and obtaining the truth from "The Bad Guys" in an "interrogation" by cocking their pistols and threatening to blow the scum bags heads off... after giving them a right beat down....

An altogether more civilized time... :ok
