The sensor’s advanced architecture provides
ISO 100-6400 sensitivity, further expandable to 50-12800, ensuring high quality images with low noise, accurate colours and wide dynamic range.

For added flexibility, the cameras’ resolution enables three new in-camera crop shooting modes–1.3x, 1.6x and 1:1. I'm certainly no shutterbug, but is an $8000 camera really that much better than a $2000 camera? (Which is way more than I'd ever pay for one) It seems to me that at some point the noticeable improvement has to become very marginal at best.

That sensor is more than twice the number of megapixels currently available. It can make a huge difference in the quality of your photos, particularly as you manipulate them more and more, and do more post-processing. You won't see some of the value in small snaps, but you will in larger format.

That being said, you can take some very nice photos with a lot less, and the average photographer will never need that kind of clarity.

I'm certainly no shutterbug, but is an $8000 camera really that much better than a $2000 camera?

The $7999 Canon EOS-1D C in my link is actually an older (2012) high-end professional model with "only" an 18 megapixel sensor. I have no idea what makes it worth $8000, let alone the $12,000 it cost before the just-announced price drop.

The cameras that Gob is drooling over, the EOS 5DS and the EOS 5DS R list for just $3699 and $3899 respectively (body only)...probably even less with all that drool all over them.





ETA: The 50MP Hasselblad H5D-200c medium-format camera costs a cool 45 grand!
(Hey, that's not so bad...with a 30-year mortgage at 4% that's only $215 a month!)

The 5DS will be a natural upgrade for my 5D mkIII, by the time I'm ready to upgrade though, newer models will be available, (or I'll be dead.)
