ETA:In celebration of our 50th year, the ANU School of Music is proud to present The Sixteen, one of the world’s greatest vocal ensembles.
The Sixteen's concert programme is entitled ‘The Queen of Heaven’ and features a stunning new version of Allegri’s famous Miserere alongside James MacMillan’s own setting of the text and glorious choral music by Palestrina.
Founder and Conductor Harry Christophers says ‘I have decided to look at the music of three composers who, although separated by centuries, are unique in their devotion to the church. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina is often billed as ‘The Prince of Music’ and by some ‘The Saviour of Church Music’; of course there are many great composers of the Renaissance, but Palestrina shines out for his immaculate craftsmanship and his sheer output. Today’s ‘Saviour of Church Music’ is undoubtedly James MacMillan, a composer with whom The Sixteen has had a long and empathetic association.’

I could not resist the opportunity to contrast MacMillan’s powerfully emotional setting with that of Gregorio Allegri. Allegri’s Miserere is the single most famous piece of sacred music ever written. However, mythology surrounds it and, in this concert, we aim to portray its evolution.’

I Fagiolini
I Fagiolini is a British solo-voice ensemble specialising in Renaissance and contemporary music. It has released 19 CDs and 3 DVDs including the world premiere recording of the Striggio 40-part mass which won the Gramophone and Diapason early music awards in 2011.
This exciting English vocal ensemble makes its debut Australian national tour with a characteristic mix of old and new, tossing early madrigals in with spectacular new works to create a delicious musical salad!
Pronounced Ee fah-joe-LEEnee (‘the little beans’), the group is acclaimed for its fearless performances of music that demand the utmost from its singers. This is extreme a cappella that ranges from the hyper-real playfulness of Janequin’s sung description of a Renaissance hunting party, to the rich imagery of a Monteverdi madrigal.
Director Robert Hollingworth leads the singers and audience effortlessly through countries and centuries, and pays tribute to his native Great Britain with Adrian Williams’ extraordinary Hymn to Awe and the exquisite sentiments of Inheritance, which was Herbert Howell’s contribution to the Queen’s coronation. The concert also features a new piece by Australian composer Andrew Schultz, especially commissioned for I Fagiolini and Musica Viva by Geoff Stearn.
